Default How much to repair?

I have a 1989 240GLT Automatic and unfortunately had to use the services of the RAC. The car started vibrating in drive and reverse and the diagnosis is the prop centre bearing has had it as the rubber has started to fall apart. Got it towed to a garage and will await their quote to repair tomorrow! Car has done 207,579 miles and until know been totally reliable. These minor things are wear and tear items and looking forward to getting him back.

What would you think would be a fair price for parts and labour?
Can't fault the services of the RAC, and even took me the 5 miles home. Well worth the £39 that I paid every year through my insurance!

No idea James, but it's only a 'glitch' he'll soon be up and soldiering on

It will depend on many things.
I had a centre bearing seize up, then turn inside the rubber doughnut.
All parts were available to fix it , but this was 2004!
Easy job but needed to use the press at work.

Best get a decent local garage to check it, as recovery firms often make a fairly blanket diagnosis.

Certainly worth fixing though, good luck!

Default volvo for ever

Recently I had the rubber bearing and the centre bearing renewed by my Volvo 245 GL 1989. Mechanic Alex Smith at Sturminster Marshall is a specillist.

The gear-box was vibrating and throwing off exhausts (can you believe). There was no centre bearing problem and no rubber bearing problem.

Having got it dismantled it was the final bearing to the flange on the gear box.

The s/hand gbox was £120. The 1st gear-box had done 525,000 miles

So not bad

It is so smooth now.

Total cost £566.50 plus the box. Worth ever penny

Exclamation centre bearing support

I've had a couple of these to change over the years. Make sure you get a genuine Volvo rubber mounting kit as I've found other makes seem to be a softer rubber. Brookhouse supply both, so make sure you ask Simon for a genuine one if they are supplying. May as well change the centre bearing while you have it in bits.
regards, Richard.

Well thanks everyone for your information

From when it arrived in their yard, Sunday, the towing company who do repairs have finally got round to looking at it today.
I went in to see them after work and got a price. £35.00 plus VAT from a Volvo independant and £50 labour except I would have to wait 2-3 weeks for one, or a used prop for £50.00.
I decided I'm best to sort new parts out so contacting FRF tomorrow in the hope they can get the parts quickly.
I'm missing my 240 and as the company had towed in numerous smashed up and burnt out cars had envisaged they had scrapped mine by accident after repeatedly phoning them for news!
Apparently though they were very busy in Burton and my car is now in Derby awaiting repair then will be delivered back to Burton!

After work phoned the company and they said "my car is ready to collect". Drove there in my works van, paid, took my van home the 5 miles and returned to the garage/car in a taxi. Started up great as usual, lights on, pulled away. Went 20 ft and still the banging and vibrating noise is still there! Garage looking at it again tomorrow and gave me a lift home and will collect me tomorrow.
The garage had fitted a used propshaft as I phoned FRF and new parts had a 1-2 week wait. Thought a used prop would do for know.
Now thinking could the garage fit it wrong to cause banging noises from under the car and vibration? Seems to vibrate less in reverse.
What other causes are there that can cause banging noise and vibration? It seems like a transmission issue. The gearbox is an automatic AW70/71.

Bummer! Do these shafts need to be balanced? anyone ? Sounds a simple thought ..... But could be relevant ... Fingers crossed anyway.

The garage phoned and everything with the installation of the prop shaft was ok. They said where the prop mates to the gearbox, there is excessive play in the bearing and leaking atf. The gearbox has always dripped from this position.
Can this bearing and seal be fixed or is it a gearbox out job to do it?
They are getting a gearbox specialist to look at it but it would seem the gearbox is knackered. Will await until Monday for diagnosis and cost.
In the meantime anyone know where to get a used AW70 for my 1989 240GLT if the worst happens?
Hi Paul. The shafts do need to be assembled as per the pre stamped alignment marks on re-assembly.
