The originals are small incandescent "grain of wheat" bulbs with blue silicone caps - you can replace them like for like, or upgrade to LED'S.

A forumite is selling incandescent replacements in the following thread (I've bought some and was pleased with the product and service) - if you read through the thread there also links to some guides and further info:

Alternatively you could put on your loosest fitting trousers and take a trip to your nearest main dealer...

V40alex is your man. I bought a complete set of led bulbs, for the price of what one main dealer bulb would cost!
Easy to fit as well
Pm him, you won't regret it.

bulbs you need are 286tac t5 you will only need two bulbs for the
phase 1heater these are cheap on ebay. the blue rubber cap that's fitted
to the volvo original ones can easily be removed and refitted to new bulbs
i found that they came off easily.

Wow, I didn't even realise the heater controls should light up! Another thing to fix!

Not really, those holders won't fit directly, you'll have to transplant the bulbs. Also, you need 'SMD' LEDs otherwise the dimming function will not work. Check out this thread http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...=193901&page=2 for more info on LEDs, but bear in mind the holders for the Phase 1 are different from the Phase 2 so you'll have to double check the dimensions before you order.

BTW, I only have incandescent bulbs for the Phase 2. I did look at getting some for the Phase 1 but as steakpie said, 286TAC T5 are the ones and they are cheap already - £2.79 posted for a set of 2 here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/286TAC-12v...-/252124628730 (not my listing, no experience of seller )

i can confirm the seller v40alex suggested on ebay is ok i bought my replacement
bulbs from him and arrived next day. alternatively if you are after smd led etc for the phase 1 try b8.5d t5 the heater panel bulb fittings are only standard instrument cluster
fittings.
