Default V70 R Transfer Box

I seem to have exhausted all avenue's until now, in my search for a replacement angle gear for my car, which I have owned for 16 wonderful years.
Volvo in their wisdom, have withdrawn this part from manufacture, leaving me, and other owners uncertain of their cars future.
My angle gear is showing signs of failure, and I am desperate to locate either a new or secondhand unit, or, someone who has the expertise to rebuild it.
So, if you have any information or ideas, i would appreciate it. Part number is 8602678
Thank you in anticipation

Hi,

I'm considering buying a 1998 V70r AWD, can you describe these early signs of failure, what should I be looking for, or listening for?

Many thanks,

Ron

A lot of people state side have been using later car s60r angle gears, I'm uncertain of the fitment though, however it is totally possible to rebuild these, I've seen it done a few times.

Lift up the car (4 corners), start the car put it in gear and see if the rears will turn. Ensure no strange noises are present, such as whining, metal on metal knocking, rattling etc. If the rears aren't rotating or you'll hear these noises, then walk away, unless you have few thousands in your pocket or willing to have it as fwd only. Before you lift it, check if all 4 tyres are the same brand, size and tread. Ask the owner of the fluid change history. (if non walk away) Also P80s can be converted to fwd only. P2s are different. Non functioning AWD can be due to many reasons on P2s , Angle gear, collar, DEM and more. Non of these are cheap to fix.

You can either rebuild it or get a used one from another car. I would look for drive shaft refurb companies who has access to special bearings.(if only the bearings are the issue) other than that, remove the propshaft and seal it. P80s can be converted to fwd only easily.

Asked my garage to check availability on angle gear for a P2 R, said there are 4 available in the UK and 8 in Sweden. £921 as an exchange
