2016 XC90 - Car not starting
Hi guys,
Wondering if you could shed some light. Ive only had my XC90 D5 for approx 3 weeks. I have been loving the drive and the tech!! Yesterday after coming out from a haircut, I tried to start the car and the instrument cluster etc came on but car wouldnt fire. Ive tried the battery disconnect for a period but nothing seems to be working. I can get the car to start with the App but obviously cannot drive the without starting Ignition. Is this some kind of immobiliser issue? Ive trawled through the manual but cannot find anything. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance. Checked battery, starter motor, fuses all seem to be fine. My other problem is the nightmare in moving the car to a garage. Ive found the release to shift out of Park in to neutral but how can the handbrake be released without engine running. I tried to put in ignition pos 2 as per manual but it still wont release. By the way absolutely no error messages show up on the cluster upon trying to start! Immy Last edited by Imtip83; Feb 9th, 2019 at 21:52. Reason: Add info |

Its not picking up your key chip.
Try the other key and pop it in the ‘low signal’ place, on the V90 this is in the cup holder in the centre console, it has a small lock logo there, the key will be sitting right on top of the transponder aerial.

Thanks for the reply. Oh noo! Im afraid I dont have a spare key! is my best bet to get a new key made up? I was planning to purchase one anyway. is there anything I could do with the current key in the meantime?
I did try the key in the transponder area, would stripping it out of the case help? Last edited by Imtip83; Feb 9th, 2019 at 22:10. Reason: .. |

From my manual: If the Car key not found message is shown in the driver display when starting, place the remote control key by the backup reader. Then try to start the car again. NOTE When the remote control key is positioned by the backup reader, make sure that there are no car keys, metal objects or electronic apparatus by the backup reader, (e.g. mobile phones, tablets, laptops or chargers). Several car keys close to one another by the backup reader may cause interference with each other.

Ive not tried the battery but will do that first things. Assumed that batt would be ok due to door locking/unlocking working fine.
There was no “key detection” error shown on the instrument display either. You are correct the key placement area is in the cup holder in centre console. I tried that already. Turns to ignition mode but wont fire, without detecting the key would that be possible? Im hoping maybe a weak battery may be the cause, but something tells me I wont be that lucky!!!! |

I dont think that you would get the ignition on if the car couldnt find the key......
I would also be very worried about just one key. Who did you buy the car from? Who therefore has the other 2 keys? The car as new comes with 3 keys. 2 normal keys and a waterproof key that looks like a USB dongle.... Back to the original problem. If you have tried a battery reset and it still wont start but doesnt display any warnings on the dash then I am afraid I am kind of out of ideas.... I assume you have your foot on the brake? I assume it is definitely in Park?

Tried a new battery and think Ive gone a step backwards coz cant get the doors to lock/unlock either now. Tried the old batt again and that too is now non responsive.
Yes in Park and Yes foot on brake. 😬 I bought the car 2nd hand with only key available, I always intended to get a spare made at some point. The other keys were “mislaid”! My other problem is trying to release the handbrake? Is there a work around for this? Ive found the way to take out from park to neutral but nothing to release the handbrake.. any help appreciated Last edited by Imtip83; Feb 10th, 2019 at 00:44. |

I had a similar problem 6 months ago with my D5 2017 XC90.
Parked in a supermarket carpark, car wouldn't start called Volvo on call they couldn't do anything couldn't even get it out of park or unlock steering wheel. Had to be put on transporter because couldn't be towed. Turned out to be a faulty sensor in the steering column related to steering wheel lock. |

Thanks for your reply. Ive read the steering column issue a couple of times now so maybe getting closer to an answer!
Am I best getting it recovered to dealers in that case? Or anyone know a Volvo specialist local to Bolton/manchester they can recommend? |
