Default Emission system warning light

I have just had the amber emission system warning light appear on my dashboard. Could anyone give me an idea of what could have caused this and how expensive it might be to get put right?
My car is a 2012 V60 D2 with 48,000 miles on the clock.
I will obviously give my garage a call on Monday, but don’t want to drive the thing if I am likely to do any damage. I have no idea, and sadly, nobody else to ask.

Thank you,

Hilary

Guessing is useless, there will be a stored diagnostic trouble code that needs to be read to reveal the problem area.

I'd save the snake oil for after the fault has been properly diagnosed.

Probably as effective as 'Grecian 2000'

The light could be on for many diverse reasons, most of which would not be cured by adding something to the fuel.

Default Emission system warning light

Just a quick update to this post following a visit to my local Volvo dealer. It seems that the EGR valve is sticking, so requires replacement.
The car will go in next week to have that work done. Meanwhile, I can drive it, but very carefully 🙄.
Hope it keeps on rolling until Tuesday.
