Default '95 960 auto transmission indicator lamp - flashing arrow

Hi there
My '95 960 is displaying flashing auto transmission dash indicator lamp - flashing arrow - also flashing between E and W modes beside the selector lever. Before contacting a dealer - as advised in the handbook - what are the possibilities? Also, how could I be sure that it is not simply an electrical gremlin causing a false signal? Are there simple tests and checks I could perform before taking it to a dealer/stealer? ( A major, long established 'since 1959' Volvo specialist changed the fluid 7000 miles ago. A short while before that the warning lamp flashed briefly, went out and never reappeared for a few thousand miles...I thought it might simply have been a false signal so didn't think much more of it but I thought a fluid change might be advisable as part of a routine service - contrary to Volvo policy. The car has done 150,000 miles and records suggest the previous owner never changed the fluid. The drained fluid was dark but did not have a pungent burnt odour.) The transmission appears to change properly and as normal. Thanks in advance and Happy Christmas to whoever goes to the trouble to send the reply. :)

When mine did that it was the inhibitor switch - could be just cleaning the contacts, could be a new switch.

I am sure I have seen a posting about changing the switch in this forum..

Could also be the mode switch (W,S,E switch) check the connections to it. The Inhibitor switch is a bit of a swine to get at as access is from underneath the car.

All the best, Peter.
