Default jumping out of gear

Hi can anyone suggest why my 2003 S40 is whinning in 5th gear and yesterday it jumped out of gear, clunked loudly then refused to go into any gear until I turned the engine of and on again? The car is a gas/petrol hibrid.

Default gearbox

Sounds like an internal problem with the gearbox I'm afraid, not uncommon with this model.

Paul.

I'm not sure which gearbox this model uses but if it uses the M3P, M5P or M5D gearbox (Renault) you should immediately do the following:

1) Drain gearbox oil
2) Remove the 5th gear carter
3) Check the torque of the primary shaft retaining nut. It should be 135Nm!
4) If the torque is not correct, completely remove the nut, clean everything with alcohol and remount the nut with very strong thread locking (Loctite 270). Torque at 135Nm and let it sit overnight.
5) Refill the gearbox with new oil and test its operation.

Jumping out of 5th gear is a common fault on these Renault gearboxes and can lead to a total destruction of the box if the retaining nut falls in the 5th gear carter. Check this as soon as you can and do not drive or attempt to drive the car until this is done. This only costs 3.4L gearbox oil, a new joint and a little time. Discard this message if our car doesn't use a Renault gearbox (badged M3P, M5P or M5D by Volvo).
