Default Thrust bearing S80 (09 plate, manual)

Hi All,
A few days ago I noticed that when I depress the cluctch a repeating banging noise can be heard under the bonnet. When the clutch is released the banging more or less disappears. Also it comes and goes, with it being most noticeable when the engine is cold.

I took it to a local dealership (yes I know) and they had a listen and immedietly diagnosed a worn thrust bearing associated with the clutch assembly. I was told that to fix it, they would have to fit a new clutch kit, as they cannot just replace the bearing. Estimated cost £1000! the car has already done 130k and is probably worth £2.5k.

The mechanic told me that I should probably not bother replacing it as it should not pose any problems for driving. He did not know how long it would last, could be a month or years. Only when the gear changes become difficult should I consider changing or replacing the car.

Firstly does this diagnosis seem correct and secondly can the bearing be replaced or does an entirely new cluctch kit have to be fitted as reccomended by the mechanic?

Many thanks.

It's as much work to fit a release bearing as to change the whole shebang so why would you do the work more than once.

Factor parts and an independent garage would be a lot cheaper or you could diy if confident enough and have the tools.

First thing I would do is look on line for the bits, then decide if the jobs worth doing. I think the volvo time is about 3 hours BUT they have a gearbox cradle that fits on the end of the gearbox that makes life easier.
Any reputable make such as AP or Mintex will be fine, also price a dual mass flywheel which may be needed when the clutch is stripped.

Paul.
