Seems the corrosion inhibitors in the fluid die and the alloy pipes get attacked bits then get into pump, rack and via the fluid the resevour.

What colour is the fluid? If any hint of brown the inhibitors are dead. Volvo have known about this for years but as the aim was electric power steering they just carried on useing the same fluid.

I change mine every 2 years as I found my original fluid brown when I purchased the car. Unfortunatly it has to be the volvo fluid or equivelent as the older models ATF which gave no problems will eat the seals.

Paul.
Checked the fluid also today and it was a nice yellow colour. Almost the same colour as new engine oil. Might try and put fresh fluid in and clean the reservoir the best I can before spending money on a new pump.

Hang on, mine is green in colour . Chesterd5 has a vidio on here about changing the fluid, his is a mk2 but apart from the resevour being in a different place the procedure is the same.
I baught 3 litres of volvo fluid but it only took 2 this time, I used 3 the first time to be sure to flush as much old fluid as possible from the system.

The filter in the fluid resevoir gets blocked. Sort that out and use "Lucas Hydraulic Oil Booster & Stop Leak" with a fluid change,

See if that helps.......fairly low cost option and it worked for me.
