Good to see work on the 240 progressing so well John.
I didn't even notice the rust on the rear arches when I briefly saw the car. Cutting the lip looks like a good pragmatic solution to keep it tidy for the next few years. |

More work today
Wheelarch repairs I wet flatted with 600 paper (just on the runs, very carefully) then 1500 all over the repair and into the adjacent area. Then I buffed with the machine polisher and cutting compound I am fairly pleased at the result. There are blemishes and it's obvious that it's been repaired. If I'd paid for it done professionally I would not be happy with this standard, but as an amateur job with rattle cans it looks OK The 'flat' area of paint above the arch will improve with more buffing Showing the narrow lip The dent near the light will hopefully be removed on Saturday. My dent-vanishing-man is coming to see to the 240. Rustproofing Before applying the Dinitrol, I dealt with some surface rust in the boot, in the wheel wells and around the hole drilled for towing wiring. Rustbusters Ltd - who I recommend highly - provided an application diagram for the 200 series estate... ... and the materials. I used the panel wipe to thin the wax to enable spraying. The spraygun on the right comes with their full kit. Drilled application holes in various places (a drill bit and rubber plugs come with the kit) Then time to get very dirty! Spraying on the wax In impact areas, the black protective wax is sprayed over the top And that's it for today! Cheers John Last edited by john h; Mar 24th, 2011 at 20:00. |

Great looking car, you've done well there.
I like the load blind too, beats my £3 Asda throw, spliced together with garden canes and cable ties! |

Congratulations on finding such a cracking car. I normally hang out in 700 land, so I've only just read the thread. I'm an ex-Huddersfield man myself.

You know it's a 1/200 when there's daylight showing at the front of the spare wheel wells!
cheers James

More good progress to report, thanks to having time off the day-job and fantastic work from Steve and Nick, who is visiting again.
Front end The headlights were removed to enable cleaning and rustproofing. The left light had seized mounting bolts, which had to be cut off... a tricky job. Nick dismantled and cleaned the lights, making the best pair from various spares I had. Luckily, the lenses and reflectors that came on the car are good. The corner lamps were resprayed internally with chrome paint. Dinitrol applied (sorry for the crap photo) Plastic battery tray was removed to allow for inspection (no rust) and Dinitrol to be applied 242GT strut braces painted ready for fitting Towbar refurb Nick has done an excellent job to transform the towbar from a rusty eye-sore to a smart feature. Before After some serious grinding, wire brushing, rust-killing and filler work The gloss black finish is now so good it's hard to photograph! Rear panel seam There's bad news and good news here. More rust than we expected when the bumper, valance and towbar were removed. But we have made a good repair thanks to Steve's excellent welding skills. Rust! The rear seam joins three layers of metal. I cut off the bottom skin slightly further back than the middle layer, to enable these two to be welded together before a repair piece is welded in underneath. Spotwelds drilled out and bottom skin removed Here I'm peeling off the middle layer Lower two layers welded together Luckily, most of the top layer of the seam is OK. Here I have cut out the rusty areas... ... and made repair panels The lower repair panel (left half) being fitted Here's our Ste welding! I feel honoured that a young man who'll go on to do great things with classic cars did his first ever bodywork welding on my 240! Filled gaps with bridging filler, trimmed and sanded From underneath Primed Seam sealer applied Painted Dinitrol applied I also applied lots of rustproofer the the other side of the seam, from inside the boot. Starting reassembly All for today, but more to come soon! Cheers Nick, Steve and John Last edited by john h; Mar 29th, 2011 at 22:56. |
