Oil Filter Housing stuck
Hi,
Went to change my oil filter yesterday and couldn't get the housing to budge, probably over tightened by the last owner. Used the proper volvo fluted tool and a 1/2 inch socket wrench with a 3/8 adapter. The adapter sheared off! I'm picking up a 3/8 tee bar this afternoon, is it okay to apply a fair bit of force to get it moving, or is there any tips or tricks that I can try? |

Very possible, this cap should only be slightly tighten there, it's already sealed by the rubber seal so tightening is just to keep it in place.
No doubt some people don't understand this and think it needs to be tightened like a wheel lug to prevent oil leaks. I'd say, give up on it, when this thing it's tightened by Hulk, no way to remove it from there because it's plastic on metal stuck and gets really stuck. Saw it then try to crack it (see online how it look without the cap so as to know where to attack it) then get a used cap from the junkyard somewhere Have you tried yet the oil drain plug? Thinking the same Hulk guy got his hands on it as well (this plug is cheap online at fcp ipd, plus it's magnetic, would suggest replacing it)

I'm with oragex, give up on it but don't take a go at it again until you have a replacement in hand for obvious reasons. I know I'm stating the obvious but that's something I would do because I'd be so determined and angry to get that thing off.
Also, to state more of the obvious, drain the oil before attempting a destroy and remove tactic. Wow, how annoying.

People simply aren't familiar.
OFF: I use my old blue steel strap wrench bushed with old trouser belt. It only sees 15 degrees of swing but after 3-4 nudges the fliter spins off. ON: Wipe / check for dirt in the adapter and on the filter housing's threads. R&R big O-ring and oil it. Spin on until you feel it "shoulder out". In the OP's case a thorough inspection of the adapter's threads is necessary as they may be clogged with galled plastic. Housing and new drain plug on standby is smart. |

If you end up ripping it apart (& still unable to remove) car will be immobile until you sort it out. If you are going to force it, if it were me, I would drive the car to a repair garage - park up outside - and only then try brute forcing it

Finally got the oil filter housing off. Used a tee bar, hit the bar firmly a few times with a hammer then put a pipe on the bar for extra leverage. It loosened off after a few hard pulls. Happy Days!
