Default Problems connecting to home WiFi

Hi, new member here. I have searched, but can't see an existing thread on the issue I'm having, so hopefully you can help.

I'm trying to connect my 2017 XC90 to the internet, but am having problems. If I set my Android phone to be a portable hotspot the car will connect to it and I can download apps from the download centre. That's fine, but I'd rather do updates etc without nailing my data allowance.

If I connect to my home WiFi network (router is only metres from the car) it seems to connect to the network OK, but doesn't appear to get any internet. I thought this might be down to the BT Hub's 'Smart Setup' feature, which requires an additional browser based step when a device is connected the first time. However, I turned this off in the router, and it still didn't work.

I then tried using connecting my Android phone to the home WiFi network and using bluetooth tethering to connect to the car. Once again, the car appears to connect (globe icon in paired devices list on the car lights up, and phone says that one device is connected), but there is no internet and the download centre won't connect.

Has anyone experienced these problems before? If so, how did you fix them?

On a related note - when I used my phone as a hotspot and it actually managed to connect, the car told me that a map update was available but that it was too big to download. It referred me to the Volvo support site, but I can't find anything helpful there. Has anyone experienced and solved this problem?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Bit of a long shot, but what worked for me was reversing into the drive. When the car was nose in I couldn't get any Wi-Fi connection. Another forum user suggested that could be because the car's Wi-Fi module is in the boot.

Sorry, no not experienced that. My S90 connected to my BT Home Hub (5) immediately on entering the p/w - though I do have Smart Setup disabled (instructions can be found here if you need them)

It may be down to the security settings your hub is using. I can't recall which is which but you need to check that your hub is using the correct one.

Just found this;
http://support.volvocars.com/uk/cars...a801516278a0ba

Wi-Fi technologies and security
Possible network types to connect to.
It is only possible to connect to the following types of network:

Frequency — 2.4 or 5 GHz.
Standards — 802.11 a/b/g/n.
Security type - WPA2-AES-CCMP.

If that makes sense to you then good luck !

I found I had to reset my BT home hub to get the car to connect to the wifi and then actually be able to connect to the internet.

Did you power cycle the hub after disabling Smart Setup? As already mentioned you may need to change the encryption type of the connection to AES. The old Home Hub 3's were set to TKIP from the factory if I remember correctly.

Although I freely admit I haven't played with the Smart Hub, it's in a cupboard somewhere!

Got to be an issue with settings on your router

Question for those who have successfully connected to their home wifi, what order of preference does the car place on the various connection options?

For instance, if I put a personal data SIM into the car for use when we're out and about, but also configure the car to connect to home wifi when on the drive, will it automatically switch to home wifi when home and just use the SIM when away?

Unfortunately it doesn't behave as a mobile phone would so you have to manually select the connection method.

My Volvo (MY18) doesn't show my phone's portable WiFi hotspot. It does, however, show home WiFi (if Im home) but with an exclamation sign - assuming I use Virgin's fiber optic broadband so router is possibly covered by some security blanket (another question - how to configure Virgin Superhub 3 with Volvo car for WiFi?)

I have followed steps as per the online manual but may have missed something and still can't see my phone as a portable WiFi. Will appreciate help on how to set up your phone as a portable WiFi and how to set up Virgin Superhub 3 for Volvo. Thanks

I'm using virgin media at home so this might differ from others.

When I first got the car, it doesn't connect to the home wifi. I can't even see it.

Read a bit an apparently it only support certain type of wifi encryption.

So I set mine to AES WPA-Personal and authentication as auto. And it connects almost instantly.

Hope this helps.
