Default S60 D5 cutting out

On Monday we were driving up the A1 in the 50mph limit, cruise control on when the car suddemly started to slow down. I thought i must have caught the cc button and turned it off but when I tried to accelerate there was nothing, the engine had died, there were no warning lights, all the lights on the dash were working as they should. I stopped in the inside lane (scary) tried to start it and it just turned over. While phoning th AA i was still trying to start it and after about 3 or 4 minutes it fired up so I put it into drive and set off trying to get somewhere safe. After about half a mile the same thing happened but this time I managed to get off the carriageway. Phoned the AA again and when the guy turned up (3 hours later) he put the key in turned it and it started straight away. I decided to opt for recovery then till I found out what caused it so had to wait another 90 minutes for the recovery truck, all the time the engine was running keeping us warm inside. Got the car home and it started up fine and drove up the drive with no problems.
At first I thought fuel pump but I can hear the in tank pump going when my oh switches the ignition on, Fuel filter was changed in October last year, about 8k ago, theres about 1/4 of a tank of diesel in it at the moment and with the type of driving I've done and the mileage I've no reason to suspect a faulty fuel level gauge. (450 miles of motorway) The car is a 2007 S60 D5 with 105,000 miles on it, Geartronic and was serviced by an independent well trusted garage last October, HEEEEElP

It may be that the transfer pipework in the saddle tank is not working properly. The net result is fuel starvation at indicated 1/4 tank or less. Try filling up and see if it happens again.

is it relatively easily fixable or does it need a new pump?

Could be as simple as kinked or disconnected hoses. Quite a few threads here with differing issues.

Well just put £50 in the tank, set off and 5 miles later it stopped. Left it 5 minutes and it fired up again and got me home.

its been in the independant Volvo specialist all week now and theyre still no wiser, a fault code read came up with something suggesting injectors 1 or 5/ wiring to them or ecu failiure. the cars starting up and the guy just phoned me to say he's driven it about 5 miles with no problem but when he first got it he started it up and left it ticking over outside and twice it stopped. Its got him stumped. He's cleaned all the injector terminals and fuse connections as well.

If the problem persists after a decent fill up and the transfer pipe is the problem, you can literally see the problem with Vida live data which will show a large imbalance between the two fuel senders on either side of the tank.
If the transfer is working correctly, the sender fuel level readings are normally within one or two litres of each other.

Theres about £60 worth of diesel in the tank now. I would have thought that was enough to eliminate the transfer pipe issue.

Probably..... It depends on where you buy your diesel.
It's a 1 minute test to be sure though and regardless, Vida is invaluable in this situation to show the data anomalies.
