Question Smoking S60

My son has a 2004 S60 2.0D, about 130000mls. It has suddenly started to pump out loads of smoke when accelerating. Doesn't happen every time though. Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

Thanks

Brian

Failed intercooler, or split boost pipe somewhere.
Get someone to rev it while you listen by front grille.
If you hear a 'whoosh' sound there is a leak.

Also have a look for oil on the radiator pack. That is also indicative of a failed intercooler.

He took it to a local garage and they said that the intercooler was split. Cost about £500 to fix. Could have been worse I suppose. Anyway, thanks for the advice given.

Default How much???

Wow!
The intercooler is under £90, eg https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_o...ooler&_sacat=0
It's 2 hours to fit at the most!
Sounds like the garage milked him!

That's probably true but he does not have the expertise or the time (or the inclination), so will have to pay up.
