Default After market ABS sensors-anybody tried the

Hi,

Due to ABS light and DICE diagnostics, I'm replacing rear ABS sensor after replacing the wheel bearing which contains the ABS magnets/senders. I'm considering trying the sensors on the internet marketplace where they cost £15 (Volvo parts cost £65 with discount at FRF).
Anybody any experience of the aftermarket sensors?
Looks like it is rust on the driveshaft that gouges out a scratch on the underneath of the sensors.
Seems like the wheel bearing change cured a 70mph droning/humming noise - there was no play in the old bearing which when turned by hand felt smooth.

Cheers

Avelar

Hi, this fixed mine. Ring was cracked and gouged the nose on the sensor. Replaced both and seems to work fine.

I'm really not trying to be patronising, or holier than thou but I'll take devil's advocate on this one.

This is a critical safety system and it isn't beyond all reason that it might one day save your life, or that of someone else. Do you really want to experiment for the sake of £50?

Hi, I purchased this sensor a year ago on eBay and it seems ebay records don't go back that far. I will look in my files and try and see if I stored this purchase in hard copy and get back.

Re the devils advocate, I fully understand what you are saying, but this is a pick up coil. My view (as a retired electronics engineer, on a pension and after consulting my volvo Indi engineer, who fitted it) is that it will simply send an adequate signal or not. If it doesent, then I will get a message.

In my personal case, I am satisfied that this approach, for this item, is acceptable. I also replaced timing gear and water pump with 'Gates' parts and front disks and pads with Mintex'. I am very happy with these suppliers. However, I replaced rear hand break shoes with genuine volvo.

I do understand that some critical items may be more sensibly changed with genuine Volvo, but how far do you go? In an ideal world I would have a new car rather than trying to keep my volvo xc90 2003 running, but try (with the advice of my indi) to be realistic.

Please note that this is just my personal view and I guess, besides some excellent advice from others, what this forum is for.

Both valid points. I'm in the same boat (and 2003 XC90) as John and trying to keep my old Volvo on the road so I'll be again grateful John if you can find details of the sensor seller. I also agree with John in that the diagnostics system will highlight any issues.
As a side note, on my Citroen C4 Grand Picasso, I replaced the rear discs as they failed the MOT due to being too thin. Unfortunately, on certain Picassos, the discs have integrated bearings and ABS ring - ouch£££! Anyway genuine Citroen parts fabulously expensive, but my Citroen dealer willingly offers aftermarket parts for cars over 3 years old. So I got discs at a third of the genuine part price.
Strangely the genuine old part had a toothed reluctor ring on the disc hub for the ABS, but the aftermarket part had a plastic cap(with magnets moulded in) that fitted tightly on to the disc hub. The plastic cap looked so much like those temporary protection covers you see I almost removed it! The outer diameter of the plastic cap was the same as the old toothed reluctor ring. Anyway, it worked fine.

Thanks again

Hi tony

I see from the bill from my Indicate, that the repair was done in march last year and looking at my pay pal acct, which does go back that far, I see I ordered a number of items, but can't find a seller to match. Sometimes the paypal address does not match the supplier, but try as I might I cannot find the supplier name. I know the rings came in pairs and I paid approx 29.99 for the sensor inc delivery, as I listed these on the reverse of the Indi bill.

So sorry, cannot help with supplier but was certatainly a new item.

ATE are an OEM manufacturer of ABS sensors for loads of vehicle manufacturers, including Volvo. You can't go wrong if you fit a genuine ATE sensor. They can be had for around half the price of a genuine Volvo sensor.

I would rather fit a second hand, genuine Volvo part then an "pattern" part, even if it is from a known manufacturer.

Yep Bosch and others make them. They also make 18v drills, the Green "domestic" versions you see in B&Q and the Blue "Professional" versions you pay 2x the price for from specialist dealers... not all parts of the same brand and spec are the same.

I might sound pessimistic but I've had a run on faulty/low quality parts recently from "OEM" manufacturers.
