Just bought V40
Hi folks I just bought new V40 2002 2 x litre. 145k. Bought vehicle off friend after finding out they had Cambelt and service done last year and paid 750 pounds.
Really good condition. Never had a big car like this before. I was always contented with poke along little 1 litre cars. Just joined the forum. Hope car 2002 has good writeup. Apart from the locking issue which ive created another thread for this. Just wondering if there is anything i need to know about |

A few minor issues I've noticed and mostly rectified with my 2002 S40 which are all fairly common:
- Bonnet release cable broken - Demister controls erratic (potentiometer wear) - Sagging headliner (not fixed, pretending it doesn't exist for now) Also changed the MAF sensor as it caused an unusual problem when I first bought the car of dropping revs for about a second when at about 2,500-3,000. Usual stuff to look out for really, lovely cars to drive on the whole. Also, for £750 for a cambelt and service, did they receive gold plated filters or something?!

The 2.0 litre is a nice car, hope it's all good for you.
Suggestion, if you've not got one, buy a bluetooth OBDII reader so you can check what if any error codes the car has. They're about a fiver on ebay and you can download a free app to any phone to connect. Then if you do get any codes, post the details on here & we may be able to help you. Most problems you (might) have will already have occured for someone else so there's probably going to be the answers on here, but again, post up if you can't find them. Re the bonnet release, yes they do appear to break, what seems to happen is the release mechanism at the front of the bonnet gets gummed up with crap - best to spray it in a lot of WD40 or similar to ensure it's free moving. There's a lot of info on the heater dials, often problems can be 'cured' in the short term at least, by spinning/flicking the dial back & forward quickly through it's full rotation. Replacement or repair are also quite doable.

Gatos very kindly did my heater control unit repair for a good price, the bonnet cable I did myself which cost me a part and a few arm cuts!

The main thing I would check is the condition of the lower radiator hose clip, as the one from the factory was not a stainless item and is prone to rusting through, resulting in the pipe coming off and the coolant dumping itself in seconds, my 1999 phase 1 did it, always worth a look.

What happened was that the accessory drive belt split and whilst spinning hit the lower rad hose and pulled it off the bottom of the rad or engine (I forget which). Luckily, I was approaching the roundabout of a service station so I could pull straight in. Water lost, but no overheating as I caught it straight away & switched off the engine. Van taken to garage, new belt fitted & it was good to go. So how did I know? On the Mercedes up flashed the display with the classic outline of a radiator, indicating LOW coolant level, rather than having to wait until another indicator to indicate OVERHEATING. Rather like the low windscreen wash message, there's similar in the coolant circuit. Now why didn't Volvo include similar when building these cars? Or why not retrofit one - TBH I'd never considered it until recently myself.
