Default speed signal

Hi,

Can anyone help me with locating a speed signal in a 1994 1.9TD SE. I need this to wire in a sat nav head unit (very nice - especially as some one else is paying for it!!) and the guy whose fitting it needs a pointer!!

I was thinjking the ecu must have some kind of speed signal into it or out of it. or does it just have an engine speed signal?

Hope yu can help. Thanks

Default speed signal

Hi

On the TD (diesel) 440/460 models the speedo is mechanical ie cable driven and there is no ecu as such as its a very basic mechanical injection diesel ie no electronics on it.

I don't think any had cruise control but if yours has..... you should be able to pick up a speed signal from that.

The rev counter is 'driven' from the w terminal on the alternator which may be of use although its engine speed not road speed.

Probably the simple option is to fit a Speed Pulse Generator

Talking Found it!

Hey dralphs,

Thanks for that. I found it in the end.
Took the speedo unit out, and using a electric drill and a spare speedo cable to drive the speedo with the dash out (Access issues with the speedo connected), we were able to probe all the connections on the two large block connections on the dash. One of the spare ones had the speed pulse. Maybe for cruise control - I dont have it though.

Soldered to a connection from this and hey presto speed signal out! It was on the right hand block, 5 from the top cant tremember which side though!

Turned out to be a lot sim pler than the BMW one series which was fitted with a similar unit afterwards!! Both me and the Pro installer thought the Volvo would be harder! Guess this shows Volvos are better!!

hi.

Glad you found a signal. I've had another look on the wiring diagram for the 440 petrol models (since the diesel diagram doesn't show the speedo) and it looks like there is an extra connection on the speedo which is taken down to the engine ecu on these models, so presumably this connection is still present on diesel versions as its probably the same speedo.

Worth noting for the future.

ps have attacled copy of diesel engine wiring

thanks

Dave
