intank fuel pump - Page 6

well for one there,s just under half a tank of fuel in the tank and on taking of the pump i used a two wire tester on a pp3 battery under the car and there was no sign of life so i took the pump of to do a propper test with a bigger battery and a tester with clips . no life at all.so i replaced for the second time.just a quick question .on turning the key to start if there is no fuel going thro the fuel pump will it burn out due to no fuel getting in the pump.also i found the two wires were the wrong way around on the coil while checking the connections tonight.so i changed them back over one is red there uther wire is blue i think the blue was on the possitive.ive tried to start after changing the wires but still not starting. checked for a spark on taking the lead of under the distributor from the coil and putting it on the rocker cover and i have a spark so thats good news

Point 1.

A PP3 battery is nowehere near big enough to run the fuel pumps - either of them!

Point 2.

It'll never run now! Put the coil conections back AS THEY WERE!!!

Just hope you haven't caused any damage to the ignition amp by connecting the coil the wrong way.

Add 4L of methylated spirits to the petrol in the tank, put the coil connections back as they were get a fully charged car battery (NOT a PP3

) and try it. Might take some time to get the meths through but that will get rid of any condensation in the tank.

i think your not under standing me a bit.to check the original pump i took it of and put it on a pp3 with two wires connected to it.there is just about the right amount of power in this small battery to prime the pump.but it was no good.having tested on a bigger battery.now the coil wires have a plus and minus the red was on the minus and the blue was on plus witch seems to be the wrong way around to me but if you care to explain to me ill switch them back around again or is there eny photos as to were they sit on the coil think the coil connections were on the wrong way to start so if thats the case then its already sustained damaged .4L meths in the tank tomorow ok thanks dave

No, you're not understanding me - a PP3 is only 9V and not capable of delivering the current the pumps need! FACT.

Volvo wired the igniton coil with the blue and red trace wires to +ve, red with white trace to -ve. FACT.

white/red (white) is -

Do you own a multimeter?
Know how to use?

Point 2

Neverever run a fuel pump dry!
Even don't try it. The fastest way to destroy a fuel pump.

Perhaps this may help.

Seriously.

Its incredibly hard (not to mention expensive) to attempt any diagnosis if you don't know the basics of what you are looking at or trying to achieve.

This course could be a hundy well spent. Hell, you've spent that much already and you still don't know whats wrong, let alone got it going.
