Default MOT test failure statistics

Hi all

Interesting site here

eg to see statistics on1999 V70 MOT failures

https://know-yourcar.co.uk/reliability/volvo/v70/1999/

Registration plate (lamp) issues cause a lot of failures.

In my case I sometimes don't remember to check. Often the plastic lenses on the rear registration plate lamp need to be removed and cleaned, and you might as well replace the bulbs while you are there.

Hope that helps,
Steve

Thumbs up

Wow - didn't know this statistics page existed - it certainly throws some light on the many woes!

Can't thank you enough for your informative post.

Even more interesting is the fact that the leaking fuel filler tube tank connector is not picked up at all yet on line various suppliers stats suggest that they sell in excess of 450 of the tank connectors each year in the UK.

It doesn't throw any light on why they were they subject to a recall in the US but not in the UK yet UK fuel tank connectors are a known fire hazard but not acknowledged at all by Volvo UK - been there done the "good will" referral - result it'll cost you in the region of £960 + VAT to correct the fault????

Default MoT Failure reasons

There seem to be a lot of issues surrounding lights. I've had a failure due to the front indicator light not being orange enough... 863 failures. I cannot measure orangeness, so couldn't see this coming.

Headlamps, side lamps, registration plate lamps not working or out of alignment... all easy stuff to check before an MoT seems to indicate people don't check before hand. Rear exhaust hanging - another easy fix as the rubber lasts perhaps 10 - 15 years, and one would notice it sagging a bit.

For the rear exhaust bracket it is also likely for it to rust and break. Volvo do a repair section for the hangers on the pipe where you just take the tail pipe off and then slide on the repair section. The mount on the car body also rusts but can easily be removed/cleaned up and repainted, obviously if you catch it in time before the hanger parts break.

Smile Lies, damn lies and statistics

Interesting reading and a useful site for some raw data. Will be looking up other vehicles when I get an idle moment.

What caught my eye was that they did not include tyres in the data as they say they are not model specific. Well, so are wheel bolts and it seems many owners are not aware that they had some missing!!!

There's a lot of data there, interesting that the number plate light is such a big hit on its own but from problems with mine I'd agree that it's a particular feature of the car; there's a lot of other lighting faults but a lot of them I'd be inclined to view as lax ownership rather than design; if one scans down the top of the list there's 3 variations of handbrake problems, add them together and they become 2nd place, again given the discussions of handbrakes on here that would reflect our experience of getting it to work really well. Scanning further down there are a lot of categories regarding track rod ends, add them up and they jump to 4th place, and given how often I seem to replace them that fits with my experience too.

I may have missed it but I don't see any rust related issues

Interesting reading and confirms my suspicions on XC90's - Parking brake problems are the single biggest point of MOT failure - more than double than any other failure point.

The number plate light issue is probably high because people expect the bulb failure warning light on the dash to alert them but the number plate bulbs aren't monitored by the system.

The N/S amp was OK but had absented i.e. worked itself out from the body of the cracked heat damaged holder - fixed it with a couple of inches of duct tape to hold the bulb in the holder - cost a few pence or so cut off a 10m roll from Aldi - still working without problem 6 months later -
