also the leads are in the right order and even if they were not it would still turn over.no multi meter.[/QUOTE]

It would turn over and wouldn't run. Worst case: backfire will destroy the baffle plate of the fuel injection.

Next step:

Fuse for fuel pump will be nr. 16 IIRC.
I'm 1000km away from my documents.
Two ways: find another fuse with 30+ (permanent power) and build a bridge to fuse 16 IIRC the lower slot, try both.
Or use a long wire from battery + to fuse 16.

You will here the fuel pump running

Try to start the car while bridge is on

If the engine will run, ignition of and bridge out.
Don't run the pumps by the bridge for more than 1-3 sec!!!! Without running the engine.

Post if this will be successful

If yes or no, next and yes or no related steps will follow

Good night, Kay

and also why would the timing just alter like that.but im thinking if it was starting before back box blew and ticking over then the fuel in the tank should not have moisture in

Yes to all. The meths has a 50/50 chance, it could be because you left the car for a while you got a lot of condensation in the tank or some kind considerate soul has added water to your tank. The meths will eliminate this as a possibility.

Not being there with the car, i can't check for dodgy fuel in other ways so we have to do the meths trick. You could even have picked up some waterlogged fuel from the filling station, i've had it happen in the past.

You need to check all three pulleys, the point on the cam pulley should line up with the dimple/pointer in the backplate, the crankshaft pulley notch should line up with the TDC or 0 degrees mark at the same time. The third pulley (auxiliary shaft on the left hand side of the engine) isn't quite so critical.

You have a Hall-Effect ignition trigger built in to the dizzy, no CPS on your car.

Cam belt teeth stripped and/or jupmed. That would cause the back fire that blew the exhuast to kingdom come. You'd left it without starting for a while you said. That would finish a weak cam belt, either strip the teeth on first or second try of the starter or make the belt jump, maybe both.

As for the fuel, just sitting there will encourage moisture to separate out from the petrol and also to be formed inside the tank, especially if the tank wasn't full.

Good night, Kay

May I salute the methodical approach, which is expressed in terms that I think even I could follow. And. I do think one step at a time, and correctly eliminating possibilities, is essential in this instance.

on the uther hand i could just get it towed away to my nearest garage and let the garage sort it out but that would be far to easy and expensive.and this way is much more fun and a bit of a learning experiance for me so im winning all round.will be checking the timing later
