indicator light flapping about
Hi, I have a 1998 V70. I heard a knocking noise this morning coming from the f/o/s. upon inspection found the indictor light had become dislodged from its fitting and was merrily blowing around on the end of the lead wire. upon handling it the lens came off the light unit. I don't know whether this is a sealed unit or not. Try as I may I just cant get the unit to clip into the recess next to the h/light. There is a fixing hole on the side of the wing but there is no plastic clip. I assume I need a complete new unit but thought I would check with you guys first incase it can be re-fitted. Thanks jack.

Jack: ~ this link should help, the unit is held on by a couple of snap in clips and a locating lug- these are highlighted in the video. You may be lucky and just find that it hadn’t been put on properly? Otherwise look for broken clips- if they have come off and are still with the car then ABS solvent weld glue should work (plumber’s item)
Good Luck Bob. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSc2orbbMWY |

Hi Bob, Many thanks. From watching the video I think the unit had been fitted incorrectly, trouble is the lens has come off the unit. Does the lens snap back on or should I use Superglue. Should it be a sealed unit I assume a new complete unit is the only answer. Thanks jack.

Jack: ~ on my car (97 V70) the outer lens cover is sealed to the unit so not normally removable but yours could be different?
If it needs to be glued back into place I would go for a high modulus clear silicone rather than s/glue- you should be able to get a better seal with this and once set any excess can be removed. I’ve done similar with Lucas classic car glass lenses and they have stood the test of time. Regards Bob |

A new standard one is £16 + postage from partsforvolvosonline.com if the clips and lens are broken I'd get a new one. It is very easy to break the clips so be careful when fitting a replacement.
I could see the arguement for trying to repair it if you have one of the C70 crystal ones as they are a lot more expensive.

Hi Bob & acshott5, Many thanks for the info. The clips on the back of the unit appear to be ok, just the lens has come off the unit. I suspect that when my mechanic fitted new h/lights he dislodged the indicator unit. Given the cost of a new unit I think I shall purchase one. My only problem is the fitting. I have watched a "youtube" demo but cant for the life of me replicate it and the unit just wont slide in. In the videos the unit used had a thin metallic bar about 2 inches long which protruded from one of the clips. Mine doesn't have that metal piece on the back. Having looked at new units from "parts for volvo" and " "auto doc there`s don't have the bar either so must conclude that a later model v70 is used in the video. Is there a trick to sliding the unit into the bodywork or am I just being thick as usual thanks jack.

Jack another video: ~ this one shows how the light is fitted to my car although it is the 98’ S70. You can see the locating lugs plus the section that needs to be pushed down for removal-approx. 0:25 into the video (these can be brittle so go easy)
Hope it helps Bob. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=844fa1T5DWg |

Hi Bob, Many thanks as always. The one the guy is fitting has a thin metal bar on the back of the unit between the clips which mine is missing and it doesn't appear on the new units from autodoc or partsforvolvo. Very strange, anyway I have given my VIN number so should get the right one. Thanks again for all your help, regards jack.

hi Bob, I think I have figured this out. The unit in the video has an orange reflective disc behind the narrow part of the lens. Mine is clear throughout. Perhaps the car in the videos is a later model. Neither new units from the two suppliers have the thin metal bar nor the orange reflectors. Thanks as always for your time and trouble. regards jack.

My car has the all clear lens as well Jack- so the same as the latest video-the plot thickens but I’m sure you will get it resolved.
Good Luck Regards Bob |
