Question XC60 D4 - cold start procedure

I have scanned the manual for glow plugs and cold start, no joy.

A couple of times now I have gone to start my car first thing, not freezing weather just a cold car, and not a lot has happened.

First time it just took a few turns of the key switch.

Yesterday I could not convince it to start, there was nothing on the dash that looked like a glow plug coil icon, however the orange engine icon stayed on.

I gave up, got out, locked up, unlocked, got back in and it started right away.

I expect if there is a malfunction it would be displayed every time I start up and the car would try to book a service.

So a couple of questions:

The alarm system is broken, booked in for service already, could that existing fault hide subsequent faults, ie at start-up has anyone ever had to clear more than one issue from the screen?

Or the simple option, is there some icon on the screen I should have noticed that means it is not ready to start yet?

There is no difference when you start the engine in cold or warm weather. Just turn the knob and release it. If the engine need help from the glow plugs this will be done automatically and there will be a slight delay with the start.
