Default Euro 3 D5 filter filter change disaster

Had a bit of a disaster changing my fuel filter today.

The old (crosland) one was on way too tight, but after eventually getting it loosened. I discovered that the white collar on the housing was split.

The old filter showed signs that it was like this at the last change (by the garage), so I fitted the new one as a temporary measure until I source a new collar.

New filter filled prior to fitting, so the car started and ran perfectly fine for a good few minutes prior to checking for leaks.

There is a slight weep from the new filter, but not sure if the broken collar is partially to blame. The bigger issue now is that the car runs like a dog now and is very difficult to start.

I took the car for a short drive and and things gradually got worse prior to the engine service warning coming up.

I'm suspecting the broken collar is causing issues, which may be why the garage tightened it so much before.

Either that or the new filter is causing it. I would have thought it would be fine given it is a Hengst one.

Does anyone happen to know if the white collar in the housing is available on it own ?

I'm assuming your filter is the metal cartridge type? The smallest of leaks is enough to cause the issues you are experiencing. It needs to be sealed properly. Do you have any photos of the broken collar you are referring to?

Sorry, forgot to mention it was the canister type.

This is the offending collar.

Yes you'll need to replace that. In my experience those collars are used to clamp the upper part of heated fuel filter housings in place. If the clamp isn't tight then you're relying on the filter to keep everything together. My experience with those white collars stems from working on Mercedes commercial engines. The Mercedes filter housings may be different to the Volvo ones, but if the white collars aren't used or are damaged then the engine will either struggle to start or not start at all.

Default Euro 3 D5 fuel filter change disaster

Many thanks for your reply.

I've called the dealer today and ordered a replacement collar. Needs ordered from Sweden.

The part number is 8629760 if it proves to be any use to anyone.

I have a similar split collar on mine.
It's bit of a pain to work around but not so much that I've bothered to replace it.
It's given me no symptoms or problems over the 6 years since I first noticed it.

The split isn't as severe though.

Thanks. Good to know and makes me glad I ordered the spare from the dealer rather than going searching for one in a breakers.

The disaster continues....

Got the new collar and a genuine fuel filter delivered on Saturday morning.

With the weather looking a bit better today, I decided to try replacing the collar and filter again.

First attempt was not that great, steady flow from the filter/housing area.

Removed the new filter again, check seals, all ok. Removed the collar holding the fuel heater up and cleaned and lubricated the seal onto the filter housing.

Refitted everything, this time no leaks. I can head the pump when the ignition is in position 2, but even with priming the new filter and leaving the ignition on position 2 for a bit, the car won't start.

Laptop on charge now to plug Vida in and see if it shows anything since after the first replacement last weekend, the drive afterwards deteriorated and resulted in Engine service Urgent being reported.

I knackered my mondeo diesel fuel pump by dry cranking.

(i failed to notice after fuel filter change the pipe quick release was busted so wasnt actually connected properly.

long story short dry cranking will kill the fuel pump
