Default High oil consumption!

A friend of mine has just bought a 1996 940 saloon 2.3 LPT (B230FK)and is very pleased with it. The only problem he has is that it uses alot of oil, the car has covered approx-75k with FVSH.
The turbo is fine and working ok, Any clues as to what it might be???
Valve stem seals perhaps??

Many thanks in advance

Matt

Could be PCV clogged with gunge. This usually results in oil being ejected from just about every seal and orifice at a prodigious rate.

I must seem a bit stupid when I ask, What is a PCV?
Many thanks
Matt.

You do not appear stupid at all, mate, not everyone knows what all the acronyms used in motor engineering are about. It is the Positive Crankcase Ventilation system which comprises a collector box/oil separator fitted on passenger side (UK) of the crankcase roughly between 3 and 4 cylinders and bolted at the bottom. This has a pipe which leaves vertically from the box to a "Y" piece with one small bore branch and the other the same size as the pipe to it. The small bore pipe goes to a brass inlet stub on top of the inlet manifold. The pipe gets work hardened and may clog which will mean replacement of the pipe and cleaning the brass inlet. The "Y" piece on your friends car will not have any restriction (small filter here on NON-turbo engines only) but may be clogged with gunge as might the pipe from the "Y" piece to the inlet piping between the AMM (Air Mass Meter) and the throttle body.

It is a good idea to thoroughly clean the whole inlet tract every two years to avoid troubles. Be especially careful with the Air Mass Meter (AMM) as it is very easy to damage it's delicate workings (thin platinum wire across the throat).

Hope that explains it ok.

All the best, Peter
