Default Heating Fan making a noise?

I have a 960 estate (1992) and there is a clicking type noise that appears when I turn the fan on. It sounds similar to a leaf being trapped in the system but I don't think it is. The noise appears to be coming from under the glove compartment. With the advent of autumn etc. I need to rectify it before I need to use the fan regulalry. Any suggestions as to what is causing the noise and what to do to rectify the situation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Charlie

You should be able to access the heater fan intake from inside the plenum chamber. You will need to remove the piece through which the wiper arms protrude to gain access to the chamber. The fan intake should be on the passenger's side and it should be possible to look down onto the fan blades and see if there is something like a leaf or piece of paper etc. caught against the blades. If you need more help let me know.

I have recently been getting a similar noise coming from the car ventilation system (1991 940 16V Auto). It sounds like someone throttling a budgie, but on the basis that this is unlikely to be the true cause, I'd like to pinpoint problem and fix it. Peter mentioned the plenum chamber. How do I remove the piece to gain access? I don't want to damage anything.

THanks - Dave Harper

The throttled budgie could be due to the fan bearings drying out and suffering from a lack of lubricant. If you have the ordinary heater (not Air Conditioning) the fan is under the dash behind the glovebox on the passenger's side. A squirt of WD40 or Duck Liquid in the right direction will quieten it. However if the noise is due to something caught up in the blades the Plenum chamber is accessed by undoing the three or four bolts along the leading edge of the panel through which the wiper blades protrude. You will need to remove the wiper blades as well to be able to lift the panel off. The windscreen bottom seal is attached to the panel. With the panel removed the access for the fan can be seen.

Thanks Peter - I have air-conditioning. Does this change anything?
