For sale: 164 manual gearbox, m400

As the title says.

1973 vintage, excellent condition as far as I can tell. It has done a genuine 80,000 miles from new. Behaves as it should, nice gear change and no "noises-off".

Taken out of my Swiss-market 164E (I put in an m410 instead to get overdrive).

I understand this can be a good upgrade for m40 equipped cars that are tuned or used in competition (it's stronger).

I'm tempted to keep it for spare parts, but would sell complete for £95.

I prefer the buyer to collect from Huddersfield West Yorks, but send me a PM if you want to discuss other arrangements.

I hope you get the Marcos sorted out - I love those cars.

Sorry, but I've now decided to keep the M400, as spares for the M410 in case I ever get a problem with it in the future.

As for your noisy box, is it bearing noise? If so, it's fixable. Find a good, proper gearbox specialist. (I know a great one in Leeds, but not very convenient for you!!).

Hi John, I think that it s a bearing problrm. I know someone who will strip it and replace the bearings but don't want to take it off the road until after the Marcos 50 years anniversary meeting in August. I have changed the oil to D140 and it is much improved but a bit heavy to change from 1st to 2nd when cold. I only bought the car last year - it had been off the road since 1977! It's great to drive.

It's a strong gearbox and noises are usually bearings. If the box gets an oil leak which isn't noticed and fixed soon, it will run a bearing. I made this mistake myself with a 164 in the 80s. Good news was that it was easy and quite cheap to fix; it was a generic size bearing, not a Volvo-specific part.

Unless the bearing noise is very bad, you should be OK to use it until after August, but I suggest avoiding track use or sustained very high speeds.

With a car off the road that long, you should expect oil seals to be hard and leaky. Suggest doing the rear crank oil seal when you have the gearbox out.

Can you post up some photos of the Marcos; I'd love to see it!
