Help! XC90 2.4d won't start and won't communicate with ecu
Hi, my XC90 (2004 model 2.4 turbo diesel) gearbox has developed hard shift problem, so I have read on line and on most forums it pointed to solenoids as the culprit and that they can be cleaned, so I rolled up my sleeves yesterday and got to work. Good few ours later all was done and I was about to test if it has worked, went to start the car and nothing... lights came on the dash but starter did not kick in (I know my battery was week) so I jumped it to my van and still nothing. It turns out that when I was re-connecting earth cable to subframe & gearbox mount I just had it finger tight and forgot to proper tighten, so mistake rectified, went back to start the car and this time starter worked and it started... but it only ran for like to 2 or 3 seconds and then just dies (like what my VW does if immobilizer is not working), tried again, the same again, it was like this for 3 or 4 tries and now it just turns over put won't fire up no message re immobilizer etc on the dash. I connected my ebay Delphi obd scanner and now it doesn't communicated with any of the system modules, like engine, ABS/brake, imobilizer, AirBag, i just get a message the control is not responding, but i can connect to instruments and multifunction modules? prior to this i was able to conncet to all. I am at a total loss as to why this has happened as prior this the car started on the button and as i said i was able to scann all modules for error codes. I have checked all the fuses and can't find a single one that is blown. Now, when I put ignition on, I also get a message that my brakes have failed, SRS service required etc... also i have noticed that next gears indicators are not illuminating? Any one any ideas please?????

You may have caused lots of DTCs with your antics. Try a reset. Disconnect battery -ve for 10 minutes then put key at position II and reconnect. That should clear all the codes and might let the car start. Charge the battery whilst you are waiting.

Hi Greg, I have tried as suggested by you, but made no difference except now I can't lock/unlock using remote key , but the car still won't start or communicate with engine diagnostics.

You clearly have Comms issues. Assuming everything was OK before you stared work, you must have broken the CAN somewhere. I would go down that route. An oscilloscope will help if you can get one.
Also check the CEM connector for water ingress. Methodical diagnosis required, no guessing. Good luck.

And keep the battery charged up. Low battery voltage will cause a lot of trouble.

This all sounds familiar to me. Mine was certainly caused by a lose negative connection on the battery, but suggest also checking the fuse for the diagnostics system. My xc90 certainly has a unique fuse for the odb socket, in the fusebox to right in the dash. (Uk)
When I got it up and running I had to clear a host of error codes, but they all cleared. |
