BTW are you really on Ascension Island then? Lots of people choose flags for fun it seems - eg I don't think Lanky Tim is really in Senegal, so I assumed you had too. Last edited by Glen Morangie; Jun 18th, 2007 at 20:01. |

Thanks guys that's plenty for me to look at, read and try etc.
I'll let you know how I get on. Yup I'm on Ascension Island; Lanky Tim's Senegal flag did confuse me, but the Ascension Island one is right, I had to get one of the Moderators to add the country to the country list, so I think I'm the only member from Ascension. I think we have 7 Volvos country wide |

Do all seven Volvos get together at all? And what about garages? Are there many on the island?

James, I don't think the other Volvo owners get together; I don't know them all that well. After thinking about it I can think of 8 Volvos:
My 765 A 745 A 764 A 480 A 440 A 460 An S40 and a 340 that's in pieces outside someone's house. The 440 and the 460 are owned by the same guy I think; I see different members of his family driving them so I think they're both his. There aren't any professional garages here as such. There are three company owned garages that maintain that company's fleet and at a push two of them will take on private work if you need them to. One of the three is a government garage which will happily take on private work but their own fleet takes precedent. Other than that people generally look after their own cars or know someone who can. There aren't any motor factors on the Island and the garages generally only keep items for their own fleet. |

Ascension Island is a pretty nice place; there are small number of images here:
http://www.ascension-flights.com/asc...hts-images.htm the wikipedia entry isn't very good and people keep "correcting" it incorrectly. It's a funny little place; British and seems very British as if it were some little town in the mainland; but instead, 4000 miles away in the middle of the ocean. Just about everyone is friendly; it's warm and sunny most of the year and there is no crime; it's pretty good. Oh and beer is £1 On the car front I didn't get chance to do much yesterday as I was busy working (I work for myself so things are mostly flexible); although I did get to remove some relays and the ignition module, take them apart and visually inspect them. I found nothing obvious, but one relay might have been faulty, I soldered it anyway. I'll put them back on today as well as check the resistance on the coil and Hall effect sensor. |

Well all the manuals were very useful thank you all but unfortunately they haven't helped me cure the problem.
I ran all the test I could find, which were mostly resistance tests on: Coil Ballast resistors Hall effect sensor They all past, but for the Hall effect sensor there was a voltage test where the instructions were to turn the engine manually whilst checking the voltage from the sensor, but I was on my own so all I could do was crank the engine normally, I don't know if that would have made the test result unreliable but the result was less than 1volt when it should have been >1.8volt so don't know about that one. I could do with checking the cam timing and I'm used to doing this by turning the wheels whilst in gear but this is the first automatic I've owned, can I still do that? I'm fed up with having a broken Volvo |
