Cannot comment on Avon Ranger Ice tyres although am a little cross as have been a keen Avon supporter over the years believing their tyres were British - only to see "Made in China" stamped on the side.

Well, that's surprising. All the other reviews of the Grabber have indicated that it's unstoppable. Maybe the weight of the XC90 was too much to get up a slow, steep gradient? Hope you have better luck with the Yoko's.

What winter tyres are these? Some winter tyres are best inflated to a higher pressure than their summer equivalents. What pressure do you run them at?

Jim.

Jim,

It probably was the weight of the car that went against it.

The driveway has a slight slope to one side and the XC90 would just slide towards the bank having cut through the fresh snow and sit on the compacted snow/ice underneath. Rather than damage the bodywork it was more sensible to abandon the car albeit as far away from the road as possible.

That said, my Mini fitted with winters felt much more secure in the snow than the XC90 on the Grabbers, the main problem being ground clearance.

I guess this year I'll find out whether it is the tyres or the weight of the car !

Dave.
