Smile Volvo V60 2011 - 2.4 D5 Engine

Hi All,

New member here, never had a Volvo, don't have one....yet.

Currently have a Mk5 R32 golf and the time has come to get something with a boot I can shove the camping stuff in without the puzzle element and inevitable stress of loading.

I've had a mooch around the forum and found various comments and input, however I thought it might be best to put this in a thread and get a direct view.

Due a fairly tight budget, I'm stuck around 10k for second hand V60 R design, I have come from 250bhp+ cars (leon Cupra & my R32) so I had been looking for something with a little poke, came across the D5 2.4 litre V60 from 2011, 202bhp or the 2012 215bhp (I assume they are the same engine but with a different tune?).

My question is, and I have seen some conflicting views on this in the forums, will the internals hold up to a middle of the range remap, so , 240bhp, and if so, is that for both the manual and the geartronic? I'm thinking specifically in terms of the clutch/flywheel rather than the turbo, or is that worth looking into further?

Second of all, I have read that Volvo engines are good for high miles, but I have found a car with 170k (!!! Poor person) in 5 years, 1 owner, full service history, cambelt done at 110k.....what other internals on the V60 is it worth looking out for with this type of use? I'm looking ideally at a 80-90k car but this popped up near me and is very cheap due to the miles, I'm usually put off but looks well looked after and I have to assume that the vast vast majority of those miles were on motorways so therefore cruising rather than thrashing.

Thanks everyone, and I hope to be a contributing member as soon as I have a car!

... you not considering the petrol alternative if your looking for performance from your R32, you will get more out of a remap with the petrol ... thats if your not worried about mpg

Look at a V60 T6 (petrol) AWD version if you want something with R32 pace. Or even better, £10K would get you an absolutely mint last of the run V50 T5 with the charismatic 5 cylinder 2.5T engine (as per Ford Focus ST / RS). These can be Stage 3 mapped to around 300bhp. I'm currently running Stage 1, and had fun keeping pace with an Audi S1 the other night.

The D5's are good, and characterful for a diesel, but not a patch on the turbo petrol Volvo's.

The earlier 202/215's had issues with headgaskets blowing,

It was mainly the boys in blue that used to have issues as there D5's were mapped, had a boot full of radio gear and were thrashed to death,

But i have seen the odd jo blogs car aswell, they modified the gaskets a few times and seem to cure the issue though,

Might sound abit odd but i actually prefer the 5pot single turbo D4 engine to the twin turbo D5,

The V60 T3,4 and 5 are ford ecoboost engines and arn't bad if a little characterless, the T6 AWD is just nuts especially in the lighter s/v60's altho i also find them abit quiet,
