Default Rear wheel noise when reversing?

I have just noticed a graunching noise coming from underneath my 2007 S80 when reversing. After a little PD, the noise seems to be coming from the rear nearside wheel and can be full recreated without the engine running or car in reverse gear. Fairly sure the noise has only started happening today (as I reverse onto my drive each time and would have noticed it). I'm guessing at a disk problem, but curious as to why it only happens in reverse? Too dark to take the wheel off tonight and have a further look.

Anyone experienced this or know what it could be??

Thanks.

Possibly a stone or similar caught between the disc and disc guard/caliper?

Handbrake shoes are known to fall apart, inspect the hand brake before driving any further as they make an awful mess if the lining comes off and get caught while driving at speed

E-park brake equipped ? If not, as mentioned, both a bent dust shield plate or de-laminated handbrake shoes could happen. For the second, really don't drive it

Thanks for the replies. As I could not find an obvious problem / stone this morning, my very local garage took a look. The brake pad was binding with the disk, so the remedial action was "remove brake pads and reshape shims on rear carrier. Clean out brakes and rebuild. Test". One hour of labour and £2 of cleaner later and I have a non graunching Volvo.
