Talking Main (high) beam fault

Iv touched on this subject previously but didn't really get far. I am still without any working high (main) beam lights. It's amazing how much you miss being able to flash someone or use high beams on dark lanes.

So the issue is thus, purchased car over 7 months ago and headlights didn't work at all. Fuse was blown. Replaced fuse and they worked whilst the car running on the drive. Next day attempted to flash someone and instantly blew the fuse.

Iv tried changing lamps for new, disconnecting 1 and both and still the fuse pops when operating. I'v even disconnected the headlight units themselves.

So, it must be a wiring issue somewhere but where to start.

Has anyone had any similar issues? Maybe a stalk problem? Maybe a relay?

I'm ****ing in the wind a little here :-p

Have you pulled back the wiring inside the engine bay as much as you can to check for any damage to the wires?
I suppose it's not impossible for the stalk wiring to become faulty...

Other than disconnecting the light units themselves I haven't done anything else.

I didn't really know where to start. I just hoped someone may have some golden nugget of information :-)

Just musing but is this an ex police vehicle? They have complicated front lighting to accommodate emergency flish/flash of the headlights when running the blue lights. When the cars are returned to civilian use it depends on who strip[s out the police circuitry. The police themselves will always do a good job but if the cars go to dealers or auction houses with the police gear still in place, it's anyone's guess what the disinterested with a screwdriver will have done.

Not that I'm aware. How would I know if it was?

What model do you have? The specific police built one’s are all named Authorities. So you’d have a V70 D5 Authorities, opposed to a V70 Se Lux for example.
That’s not to say, you can’t have a relatively civilian spec one with previous police usage, but is rare to find.

Well it's a 200u xc70 se lux. I doubt an xc70 would have been a motor of choice for the police?

Anything that blows a fuse immediately with a "snap" means a direct short to ground

As you sometimes blow the fuse, you likely have a chaffed cable loom somewhere.

You will have to trace the wiring loom back from the headlamp.

I've traced such problems before in my life.
Example: On a brand new car with intermittent blowing of fuses I found a taillight loom jammed under the taillight assembly, chaffed through, and shorting to the metalwork. Sometimes.

Tell me what year XC70, maybe I can find a wiring diagram for it.
With a wiring diagram it takes the guesswork out of where to look.
