Default '04 S40 Drivers door wont lock with key or fob

Hello chaps,

Recently bought my first Volvo, a 2004 reg first gen S40, so this is my first post here!

Car's been great but today the driver's door stopped locking, either with fob or key. The door button is permanently depressed and wont come up.

If I use the key to lock it, all other doors lock but drivers door can still be opened using the door handle - same happens using the remote fob.

To make matters worse, opening the drivers door unlocks all the other doors - so anything left in the car is easy pickings!

I assume there's a problem with the lock itself if even the key wont work - can anyone advise?

Thanks!

Grab the locking peg with a pair of pliers and pull it up until you feel it move up. Then retry the locking and see if that sorts it. Most of the time these get stuck down and just need a yank up!

Cheers Matt I'll give that a shot tomorrow (as I don't have any pliers to hand right now) and see if it works.

You might be able to do it by hand but it's hard to get a decent grip otherwise.

A squirt of wd40 down the side of the button, then activating the central locking until you are able to get a grip on the button with pliers. Then steady pull up.

I had the same issue when I bought mine and it never returned. Cheap fix!

Default Problem solved!

Who'd have thought WD40 & Pliers could work wonders?

Thanks for the tip!

Default Similar Problem

My recently purchased V40 (2001) came with no key fobs just two keys and now the drivers door lock is playing up. I can lock the car with the key, all four locks activate and seconds later the car deadlocks.
However if I pull the drivers door handle it opens! before deadlocking it unlocks the whole car, after just the drivers door.

Please help!

Surely that's normal? I only say that because of the time involved, if your car deadlocks after a few seconds from locking it then you must be trying the handle barely one second after you've locked it, before it's had chance to deadlock, this sounds like the same sort of behaviour you get when you go to unlock your car and a passenger tries the handle just as you turn the key in the lock, there's a clunk and it locks again, the same principle as what you're describing only the other way round.

if that where so why would it still open after deadlocking? the outside handle was behaving like the inside one opening the car no matter what.

I have had it looked at today by a mechanic and it seems to be sorted...
