Default Windscreen valence grill mesh

Hi all,

Reference the mesh grille that sits between the bonnet and the windscreen on my '97, 945. The surface panel has a series of longitudinal slots cut into it with (in my case) a black, diamond-mesh below it. One end of the mesh has come loose and sags down allowing all the autumn leaves to disappear below no doubt to clog drain holes.

Presumably this is a tricky one to fix from below (behind the dash?) so does anyone have any clever fixes? I'm thinking maybe tiny cable ties or colour coded garden wire to fix the mesh to the slots above but neither will look neat so open to suggestions.

Thanks for reading.

Cheers,
LeeP

Open the bonnet fully, following the Haynes instructions to remove the scuttle panel to replace the windscreen wiper motor and the mesh is accesssible.

I've done a write-up and can email it to you tomorrow if you PM me an email address.

I had precisely the same problem on my late 745.

It is a relatively easy job to remove the scuttle panel (about 3 bolts across the inside lip once the bonnet is opened. Tip - don't remove the bonnet rubber seal as the scuttle draws upwards and off its side 'lock' pins with the seal attached.

I found the more difficult part was to extract the two wiper bosses from their drive spindles for which I bought a small puller off eBay rather than damage the paintwork.

I took some pics when I 'did' mine and can post them if wanted.

Mine has sagged on the whole front which causes a lovely loud vibration at certain RPM, I really must get around to it. I will be sikaflexing it back in place, don't forget to hoover all the leaves up and check the drains while in there.

There should be a write-up in the December 2019 issue of "The Driver" that I have done. The attachment is the text component of the article.

This was quite common in their day . the mesh is held up with butyl tape , what they used to stick in 240 windscreens .. volvo still sell it , great stuff it sticks anything to anything ..

Guys,

Thanks for all the responses.

I only half-heartedly posted this on the off chance thinking it was far too obscure for anyone to respond. Amazed at the number of detailed replies (even the pragmatic ones!). Just shows what a great resource this forum is.

Special thanks to Loki for the advance article text. Looking forward to the December issue of "Driver".

Cheers,
LeeP
