Saw a Hillman Avenger saloon driving down the main road near me today. Not only was that a pretty rare sight in itself these days but it was one of the "Limited Edition" models with a vinyl roof that ran from the top of the windscreen to just about the "B" pillar.I know of another Avenger saloon about 3 mile away from me but that one has a bonnet scoop and from the sound of it a decidedly non-Avenger engine in it.

I had a Hillman Avenger Estate when I was younger, but I think I'll stick with my V70, rarity is one thing, desirability is another

I too had an Avenger estate back in the early '80s then later in the '80s I had a 245 auto the difference between the two was noticeable[to say the least!] but then the purchase price difference[when new] would have been too.

It is surprising what is still on the roads. I saw an immaculate Allegro the other day and wondered why anyone would love such a thing - someone obviously does as it had had a lot of time and money spent on it. There is also an old chap I see quite regularly who drives a scruffy Austin 1100. It appears that he probably bought the car new and has continued to run it as his daily ever since - I like that sort of eccentricity.

Yes, only the other day I saw an immaculate looking Renault 16 from the 1970's.

I saw a Morris Marina the other week & also a Montego.

Now the 16 is rare AND desirable. I'd love one!

My neighbour bought an Avenger new back in the 80s. Before it was two years old, you could see the rear wheels from inside the boot, the wheel arches had rotted away. Poor quality steel and, presumably, lack of underseal were the culprits.

Bet it has had the clutch cable mounting on the bulkhead welded. Was a common problem, one minute driving down the road , next clutch on the floor and still engaged as the outer cable pulled through the bulkhead.

Cars of the 60s 70s 80s certainly had character and driving was done in the spirit of adventure. Will we get there, and if we do will we get home again. Half a workshop in the boot was required luggage if one wanted to be sure.
Volvos are super reliable perhaps, but I miss the excitement and the constant tinkering, one of the many reasons I bought an old landrover.

Paul.

It’s amazing how cars gradually disappear without realising. I saw an immaculate ‘97 Megane the other week, H reg Astra, M Laguna...all common as muck in their time. I still see quite a few early 2000s S60s on the roads
