My view is to get another engine fitted, you can get a great one for a very reasonable price and look at it as an opportunity to check engine mounts, turbo etc.

Certainly if you like the car, just simply swap the engine, my costs were £1k plus the engine and in my case s new turbo.

You can change belts and consumsbles at the same time, and hopefully it will last many years longer.

The question really is can you buy another car for that £1.5k?

I would re-engine. There are so many around to choose from.

Get another engine fitted, they're cheap second hand as they last so well (although you may disagree with that currently.....) - someone on e-bay was doing them fitted for around £1,500.

Do you know if the belts were genuine or pattern parts?

It's not going to cost no where near that for me to repair mine .... I'm going to remove cylinder head drop off at the engineering company for them to skim head and replace any bent valves .. (I've used them for at least 30yrs ) then they supply head gasket bolts and head set ... they are a very good trustworthy company who do a lot of engine work / rebuilds

If you can take the head off yourself and refit it you should be quids in - but there's no room for skimming these heads much and when the cambelt goes it usually cracks the hydraulic tappet housings. Some people do offer a repair service but the tolerance is critical for the oil pressure hence it's much easier to get a replacement head. The last one I did a few years ago I got a full engine for £350 and took the head off that. That will be cheaper than new valves, lifters, machine work etc.

Yep its knackered !!
Its snapped the journals that the hydraulic lifters fit into
So now do scrap it
Fit second hand engine
Or look for a good head

I have a look on e-bay to see what comes available near you and at what price. Whilst there is a risk putting in a whole new engine that's got unknown history and condition, swapping the head is also a lot of work if you do it properly and clean everything, I think a lot more work than swapping the engine (in the XC90). There's also a fair old cost in gaskets and seals etc.

So if a good engine became available with reasonable mileage, I would drop that in and do the cambelt, seals, etc. and hopefully you will be set up for a good few years more.

Which engine is yours?
