Towing is such a grey area atm for people like me who passed after 1997. Im looking to buy myself a cheapish 4 birth caravan for the odd weekend away and mainly for le mans next year

Im not after a big 26 footer, just a moderatly sized one, something around 900-1000KG would be fine.

Im presuming my 740 estate B230E would manage this task with no problem?

Yes, well within the limits.
Remember that your caravan has 2 weiights.
The weight of the caravan as kitted out (shower, cooker, fridge etc)..
Then the weight of the above with the luggage, food.
The second weight should not exceed 1300Kg or thereabouts in your case, and look to carrying 250 in luggage, food etc.

If you passed your driving test before Feb 1997 you can legaly tow a trailer weighing up to the "max braked trailer weight" quoted in your owners handbook. (as long as it does have brakes).

Trailers and caravans are not by law "plated vehicles" ie; the MIRO / MPTLM figures are a guide only, and not legaly binding. So if you get pulled over, the police can't use those figures to "do you".

Police will have to take you to a weigh bridge, and proove that you are towing above the weight given in your handbook, before they can prosecute.

As long as the "ACTUAL WEIGHT" of what you tow is within the limits for your car, and you passed your test before Feb 97, YOU ARE LEGAL. Maybe not 100% suitable........but legal.
