Grating noise when lifting off accelerator

850 '96 20 valve auto. When lifting foot off accelerator while car is being driven forward at anything over 10 mph there is a sort of just audible grating noise but not quite a screech coming from front. Anyone come across this before?

Check for slack in the engine mounts particularly the top one.

Hi,

I've had a grating noise coming from the front of my '94 SE manual. It used to happen only at certain times in certain gears, but it's doing it more often now. I've narrowed it down to the heat sheild above the exhaust manifold. My guess is that as you lift your foot off the accelerator, you go through the range of frquencies that sets the heat sheild vibrating. It sounds like a buzzing / grating noise.
