Default Part Nos for Front indicator/sidelight 940? - Bizarre!

Hi folks,

I suffered a completely bizarre situation last week in the gales. Part-way through my journey home, I appeared to suffer a blown indicator bulb. (Fast flashing.) On reaching home, I walked round to see which bulb had gone, only to find that the entire n/s/f corner lamp cluster had disappeared!

This was in the huge storm and I was battling to keep the car on the correct side of the road from the massive gusts as I came along the coast road. I can only assume that the lens unit had been blown out during one such attack, leaving just the wiring connectors dangling through the hole. (I've not had that lens out since I got the car but I can only assume that the previous owner had broken the plastic retaining tab securing it to the wing. Nonetheless, a pretty astonishing event!)

Anyway ... I can get a new lens unit easily enough but they don't come with the bulb-holders and I'm struggling to work out which ones I need (and to see whether they're still available.) They're the last of the line clear lenses so I need the sidelight bulb-holder (probably common from the days of the 740) and the holder for an orange-coloured bulb (which has the bayonet pins offset to prevent a clear bulb being fitted).

Does anyone have access to VIDA or whatever to look it up? I've tried the usual US sites but the line drawings make it impossible to know whether it's a clear or orange & clear split version and they seem to have a single combined lamp anyway over there, so that's no use.

Thanks,
David.

First, it's not that uncommon for the plastic retaining tab to break off with age and the cluster to fall out. Second, the sidelight bulb on the 740 is a twin filament 21/5W, the 21W part for the day running lights and the 5W for the sidelights (which turns the 21W filament off when the sidelights are switched on) and lastly, were you aware you can buy orange bulbs with "straight" pins (i.e. not offset at an angle like the later type) ?

The big question is what year is your car? Many older 7/9xx have had clear front indicators fitted as an upgrade, so it's not easy to say which you have. Despite looking the same, not all of them are the same.

Check those two threads out, the first by Luke/360beast, he's breaking more than one 940 so may well have them, the second by Mark/Griston64 i think he's only breaking the one car but may have the bits you need.

I don't think I have saved any of the side light unit bulb holders but I will check.

If you buy new indicator units from Volvo they come in a nice little box with carry handle, and include new holders and bulbs. They were about £65 each.

I've got a set of new Depo indicators units without bulbs available, £5 the pair, collect only, Burton/Swad area.

Thanks all.

It's only now that I realise that I forgot to mention that this is my 940 Celebration. I think that makes it model year 98, hence clear lenses.

Laird Scooby - Yes I'd spotted that you can get orange bulbs with straight pins but the snag then is that you have to know which holder has which type and/or carry both bulbs as spare. Not a huge hassle I suppose but just something else to think about (that will inevitably get forgotten again until it's gone critical). I'd forgotten the 740 had twin filaments as I took the relevant DRL fuse out shortly after I got that one, when it had started melting the baseplate again after some muppet had jammed a wire into the top of the fuse pin in the past, presumably in an attempt to bypass that problem the first time round! (The bodges some people try to get away with - shocking!)

Baggy769 - I didn't realise the lenses from Volvo came with bulb-holders. Thanks for those part numbers. I know I can get just the lens from Parts for Volvos for only a few quid but if they're still available with the holders (or if I can get holders to add to another cheaper lens) then that would be good. Useful to know as a last resort, anyway.

Griston64 & 360beast - thanks - let me know if you've still got them when you've looked.

Once I've got that sorted, I'll have to wait for a break in the weather as it now looks as though it's just blown the head gasket ... unless it's the head! One exhaust manifold gasket (I thought) has been slightly 'chuffing' for a little while under load but it's now running on 3, (No 2 plug looks black and wet) with the exhaust steaming like the Flying Scotsman, wisps of steam out of the oil filler cap (slight emulsification beneath) and coolant disappearing at a rate of knots. <sigh> I do love my old Swedish bricks but they do sometimes try your patience a bit!

Ta,
D.

I might still have a clear indicator lamp-holder, as I converted the Valdez to orange-lens units many moons ago. I'll have a look later today.

Thought I'd better just bump this to see whether those who were going to look for parts have managed to find anything.

Not yet, a bad cold has got me stuck indoors and off work so I haven't been able to look through the parts horde for a while.

Commiserations! I know what you mean, I've still got the lingerings of one that's been with me for about 10 days. "There's a lot of it about", as the saying goes!
