Default Radio upgrade

Hello All
I am thinking about replacing the standard single DIN radio/cassette unit fitted to my ’94 850 GLT with a Volvo HU605 double DIN size radio/cassette/CD player.
Has anyone out there carried out a similar operation? Firstly, there is a 5-pin DIN plug leaving the back of the existing unit, which I assume feeds a power amplifier somewhere.
Can anyone please help me with the following questions:
1) Where is the ‘power amp’ situated?
2) Does it need to be retained if using the HU605 unit?
3) Does the HU605 have the same internal top fixing lugs when the front removal bars are depressed, or are they at the bottom – the HU605 has similar front removal bars but these are obviously in a different position (at the lower end of the double size fascia)?
4) I need to cut out the intermediate plastic ‘shelf’ between the radio and the small plastic compartment beneath it in order to get the double DIN size HU605 in. Having done this, will the HU605 fit into the larger aperture or is there any other fitting ‘adaptor’ required?
5) Does Volvo (or any other supplier) do a wiring adaptor kit as the socketry is different?
I would be most grateful for any other advice anyone may be able to offer!
Happy Christmas to all.

Default RE: Radio upgrade

Hi there,

I would also like to upgrade my sc 700 radio in a 96 850 se but am unsure as how to proceed. The radio looke huge for one thing! What do you think the most cost effective upgrade would be, do we get an different radio model from Volvo ie the sc 900 or go aftermarket instead?

Thanks for any help... what I'd like is a cd player just a single would do, does Volvo do them?

The SC700 can take an Apline CD changer in the boot with an adaptor wiring kit or alternatively, the Volvo CD changer which costs more but is the same stuff. Ask your Volvo dealer or have a look at this website, nothing to do with me, just did a search in Google. No guarantees or anything.
