Default TF80-SC gearbox replacement - compatible part numbers

Hi all,

I recently bought a 2008 XC90 D5 with a known gearbox fault (but fault unknown)

Basically, it doesn’t have drive, will not engage reverse and seemed to be stuck in gear, I.e. would move forward even in park. It would drive forwards but only slowly with about 3000rpm (slipping badly), but no reverse

I changed the fluid and cleaned up all electrical contacts on the TCM and it’s made no difference (actually I have no forward drive at all currently). I did notice that the gearbox was overfilled originally by around 4 litres! (6.5 litres came out just from the drain plug, subsequent fills were around 2).

I’ve come to the conclusion that the gearbox is likely kaput, so my question relates to part numbers.

My gearbox has a part number of 30783229, serial 07E3828822. Do I have to get a box with the identical part number (difficult to find) or would one from a 2009 S80 be a straight swap? That part number is 31259368 (09E3816006).

I really can’t find any info anywhere and have been searching for a good few hours. I have Vida (without the dice module until it arrives) and that just gives me a gearbox exchange part number which is little help

My intention is to buy a used box and take to a garage for straight swap (hopefully)

Assistance would be most appreciated. Thanks

The best idea is to get the same gearbox matching numbers.
I am not the expert but swapping TF80SC even OEM numbers are different is possible but these must be xc90 or xc60 gear boxes.

Dont buy any other model like S80 gearbox for example. They have different gear ratios and most commonly are 2wd (front wheel drive).
Your car is 4x4.

Thanks. I realised after I posted that I forgot about the 2WD/4WD issue.

Forgot to add, I had someone do an error code check before I changed the oil, the only code was:

TCM-0029 Gear 2 incorrect ratio

I haven’t been able to test since I changed the oil and lost Drive. Could there be a simple fix or would a new/used box be the safest course.

As has been said whilst this gearbox was used in lots of Volvo models, you must seek a doner that was a diesel AWD vehicle.

Needs to be AWD otherwise the drive to the transfer box will be absent and the o/s driveshaft won’t fit.

Needs to be diesel as the differential final drive ratio will be incorrect.

Ideally should be from an XC90 as I think the final drive ratio may differ from the XC70 which is 400kgs lighter but open to be corrected on that one.

Obviously to some extent there is a risk around swapping gearboxes with different part numbers but I have done this successfully in the past, but in some cases I needed to swap wiring looms, senors and brackets over etc.

Tip: usually on the gearbox there is the manufacturers part number and volvos part number - if the manufacturers number matches you are probably there.

Thanks all. I think I will get some quotes from gearbox specialists for rebuild/replacement. Anyone used Automatic Transmission of Huddersfield, seem to get decent reviews over the years. There’s a few firms in Hull, but I feel they will perhaps just rebuild without finding the problem (could be just the valve chest for example)

I don't think there is a auto-trans specialist in Hull that would overhaul it - they would probably send it away or get an exchange unit.

If no-one comes up with an option on here, suggest you look on e-bay, there are sellers offering the recon service with say 12 months or 10k warranty and you can check their feedback.

Hi, I would strongly recommend getting your existing box fixed rather than buying a 60,000 mile (honest) unknown gearbox from a breaker, the auto box is the weak link in an XC90 and the chance of retro fitting a lemon is quite high.

Sounds to me (but I am not an expert) that either the oil pump has broken or more likely its drive (very common breakage when fitting the box if you don't know what your doing) or you have a major internal oil leak.

In short my diagnosis would be that your valve body is not getting enough oil pressure to engage the gears properly.

I have just had my box reconditioned by Austrin Gearbox specialists in Newcastle ask for Joe he is a Volvo enthusiast and seems to know these gearboxes very well.

If your in Hull I don't think Newcastle is that far for you.

regards Ben
