2003 V40 115bhp diesel surging
I'd like to tug on your coat about something.
Started today on the motorway with what sounded like the heater fan blowing fast and slow repeatedly. (Which the fan does need looking at, so not totally out the ordinary) Then noticed a slight surging when keeping a steady speed coupled with black plumes out the exhaust in time with the surging. I was getting off at the next junction anyway, but nothing on slowing down but pulling off from the roundabout starting at around 2000rpm, if slowly accelerating a strong surging/backing off with the black plumes on surging and a diesel rattle on backing off. The real strange thing when surging is a noise that i've never come across with any engine, what can only be described as the sound of pebbles on a beach when a strong tide washes over them. It sounds similar to the heater fan on full within the cab, like the pebbles with window down or outside car. Under load black plumes on surging, stationary no smoke but still the pebble sound when blipping revs then normal sound until 2500rpm when the sound of pebbles is constant. Under hard acceleration no surging but a real load pebble sound. When idling the revs are steady, when keeping at any revs, say 2500rpm under load and car surging the revs are again steady. Any ideas anyone? Anyone experienced similar? I was thinking maybe the diesel pump on it's way out. It's hard to tell, but it sounds like the sound is coming from the belt side of the engine. Thanks in advance

I had surging caused by a dodgy egr valve. I blocked it off and not had the issue since.

Sorted the problem. Had a split hose going to the intercooler
Pinched a hose off the donar T4, not exactly the same but will do till a replacement can be found Posted a short clip on youtube to show the weird noise that this caused. https://youtu.be/kEQCVW3y3i0

Quote:
The EGR on a diesel will not block suddenly, it will cause a significant lag when booted well before it blocks up. Never had to clean mine yet, as a good session on the autobahn burns it clean.
