Default LED stop and tail lamps

I am considering upgrading the stop and tail lights on my V90 estate to LED but no one seems to sell a canbus twin filiment lamp, has anyone managed where I have failed?

Halfords , £20 a pair & they specifically advise NOT for on road use

From my job point of view ( MOT tester ) unless the light units are designed to use LED from the factory , aftermarket tends to actually be either dazzling or difficult to distinguish between tail & brake light working .

One point many people forget , LED are mostly rated to produce a light colour temperature of 6000K ( quite blue ) with very little red light if any emitted , resulting in a dimmer light when seen through the lens .

Oh & if you get the idea to fit LED to number plate , please make sure it does not resemble day driving lights from behind , aim for around 4000K

Good point, thank you. Number plate bulbs replaced with LED a long time ago with apparently no problems, been through two MOT's.
The reason for considering a change is that conventional bulbs no longer seem to last long, those from Halfords seem the worst, but none are a lot of good.

I used LED 501 lamps in my sidelights for the last 6yrs woth absoluteky no MOT issues what so ever. These were from Halfords, they’re considerably better quality than the EBay ones.

I have no experience of Halfords LED's, the conventional twin filament stop and tail are the ones that bug me,they seem to have random resistances throwing up a warning without a fault, sometimes on the brake circuit, sometimes the tail light.

Never used em tbh, I’ve been using LED 501’s because of their habit of going opaque over time and losing brightness.

Genuine Volvo bulbs are designed to last a lot longer than the average ones you'd find at Halfords etc. They cost more to buy, but you won't be spending time (or labour costs) to change them as frequently, so better value long term.

You are probably correct, however even though I live in the second city there is not an easily reached Volvo dealer, there is one across the city,at least an hour and a half out of my day or the alternative is Stourbridge and that takes about the same time. I use Rufe in Swansea but not for bulbs.

AFAIK the difference is in the packaging not the actual bulb - I have certainly never noticed that a Volvo packaged bulb outlasts any other sort of bulb

I notice also that the rear bulbs in the car have Osram stamped on them which might be a clue as to where Volvo buy them from (they were removed to see what size and type needed to replace with LED, not because they were broken)

Yup, I don't see Volvo setting up their own bulb factory anytime soon.
