Default Strut Top Mounts

Hi All,

I rebuilt the front suspension on my 05 XC90 earlier this year.

The front end has developed a horrible creak when turning at low and lowish speed.

I suspect it may be the strut top mounts. On looking back at the receipt, the upper spring seats were genuine Volvo, but the top mounts were aftermarket.

A couple of questions:

Are top mounts the most likely cause of a creak?
How much would you expect to pay for Volvo parts? Marshall Peterborough have quoted me £240 for the pair!

Thanks in advance,
Paul.

Wishbone rubbers and a tired ball joint?? I got front end vibration when braking lightly at speed.

Thanks laundryman.

Replaced wishbones and ball joints and front shocks in the spring too. Definitely worth a check, but the wishbones were gen Volvo.

The noise can be replicated by turning the large nut on the top of the shock, which is why I suspect the mounts.

Cheers,
Paul.

Question Wishbone bolts?

Hi,
Not saying it is not the top mount it could be, but did you replace the wishbone bolts to subframe, particularly the rear one that passes through the bush?

They are single use and mine were ok to start with but stretched and allowed the rear bush to move a little and creak. Completely cured with new bolts.

The top bearing can fail quite quickly if its a cheap buy because it supports the whole weight of the car. Lemforder or INA should be a good buy for this part and far from the Volvo prices. Have someone turn the steering at idle and approach your ear to listen.

Were the ball joints also Volvo part?

Ive just learned the hardway.

I had the top strut mounts replaced two years ago. Indy provided the parts supposedly very good quality (Febi). They have failed again as diagnosed by volvo on Wednesday.

Does anyone have a link to were i can purchase Lemforder, Meyle or INA parts at a good price.

ECP dont have these brands listed online

try
Skandix
Look for strut support bearing

had a few bits n pieces from them in the past

They list all of the possible suppliers so don't know if you can pick and choose or you get whichever they have in stock at the time. I suppose you could email them and ask for specific suppliers

FCPeuro, IPDusa, Eeuroparts. Don't touch to Meyle other than HD for droplinks, don't do the same mistake again. Anything bearing or rubber in Meyle, Febi or Sweden Parts is made to last 6-12months. My Febi spring seats also cracked in less than 1yr with very low miles. You want to look for Lemforder, Sachs and Ina, or if the budget permits Volvo original.
