That was my first thoughts, but that would not explain changing to manual mode at the same speed and the noise dissappearing, drop it back into auto, noise comes back, if it were a wheel bearing the noise would be constant, surely?

Matt - It certainly doesn't sound like a wheel bearing issue, if by putting in Manual Mode the sound disappears (obviously sounds more like gearbox issue). It's not something I've tried on my wifes car, so will try that to confirm.

I thought i had a bearing issue on mine but when i got the tyres changed and got rid of the cheap ones put on when i bought the car the noise went.
Mine also disapeared in manual mode but i think this was more to do with the gearbox locking up and the engine noise remaining. |

Got to drive the wifes XC90 again this weekend and can confirm I still get the whining sound whether in Auto or Manual gearbox mode.

My rear nearside did it all the time. My front offside only did it while turning right. (sometimes) I found it very difficult to identify where the noise was coming from each time. ( and so did the garage) A new bearing fixed each time.

Mine is exactly the same, I have a gearbox whine and a rear axle whine that comes in at 35 - 45mph, axle whine dissapears at around 45 but gearbox whine still there until about 55mph. I think it's probably just wear and tear. I'm going to try having the gearbox softwear updated and I have already changed the gearbox and diff/ haldex fluids.
My only other thought is whether worn drive shafts make a noise??? Never had to deal with a worn drive shaft so wouldn't know. My rear axle noise does almost dissapear when the AWD is functioning correctly, which it isn't at the moment due to the sensor in the DEM failing. |

Was experiencing a whine from the transmission but wasn't sure if it was a bearing or other. Turns out it was transmission as it failed last night. Awaiting espouse from dealership. 104k.
