D5 Engine/Gearbox Mounts - how to check condition
Hi all - new to the XC90 world, recently bought a '12 D5, so far delighted with it.
It's in on wed to get the water pump, timing & aux belts done (232k miles) and figured given the mileage, it might need the mounts doing. I'm keen to do myself - i have a 2.5t jack and axle stands - and have familiarised myself with the vacuum/non vac nuances etc. Is there an easy way to check if they actually need to be replaced? The top engine torque mount is definitely toast, but unsure of the others. Any pointers to visually inspect or test another way would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Simon has provided a very helpful video of how to test the vacuum pads
https://youtu.be/30QDz4xnJms?feature=shared The rear will be the more challenging of the two to replace.

With access to a vacuum guage it's good to check the vacuum pipework for leaks too.
Perhaps initially attach at the vacuum pump "inlet", and at the turbo control valve etc to see if there is a leak, anywhere, in the vacuum circuit. |

Thanks both, very useful. I'll get hold of a vacuum gauge and see what the pipework looks like.
That video is great too - very grateful of the large network of home mechanics the XC90 seems to attract! |

if your top mount is gone the gearbox torque mount will be bad as well these are the 2 easy ones to replace vac mount are a little more difficult the one under the aux pully is prone to fail and usually makes a knocking noise when it touches the sub frame

At that mileage I would imagine that some if not all have already been replaced already, and some maybe more than once.
I replaced all 5 of mine at 110k and the 3 solids were all shot the front vacuum was weak and the rear was ok. I am planning on keeping mine until it falls to bits or the government make it impossible to own, so I did them all. If I were you I would get a set, they are not cheap though.
