It's been mandatory for all new designs and introductions from late 2012 I think it is.

It is mandatory on ALL new registration cars from November 2014 i.e. has to be retro engineered to existing cars sold as new from 1st November 2014.

http://www.techeurope.co.uk/tech/new...-TPMS-imminent

Some facts on EU TPMS legislation:
As of 1st November 2012, all new-type vehicles will be required by EU law to have a pressure based tyre pressure monitoring system installed. This applies to the road wheels, not the spare
By November 2014, all new passenger vehicles will have to have TPMS installed by the manufacturer
The law is not currently retrospective, and does not apply to older vehicles

We thought about it as we have TPMS on our Beamer but researching a little, once fitted it becomes part of the MOT and if they are not working the car fails, so we decided not to in the end. Also, I understand, but could be wrong, that Volvo don't use the ABS system like BMW but units in the tyres? The garage offered to fit them as an accessory, but we've spent well over our budget (happily).

When I had my 2005 Mercedes I had a specialist use his "star" computer to activate TPM via the abs. Wouldn't tell you which tyre, just a warning that one wasn't right. Took him 10 minutes. Not rocket science but I've gathered its beyond Vidas ,,,.

TPMS is mandatory on all new type approvals from 2012 and as an extant type approval the XC60 won't be required to have a mandatory fitting of TPMS.

The new XC90 is different, that is a new type approval therefore will have TPMS.

The other aspect of this requirement is that it will require an intyre device to measure the actual pressure, the systems fitted which use rotational speed differential to indicate tyre pressure will not be allowed. His applies to many of the German systems

Just spoke to dealer, TPMS is currently not available as an option for the XC60

You definitely don't want the current Volvo TPMS as all it does us telly you the tyre has lost pressure and only then if you go into the menu to check the status.

It will need to improve dramatically to make it worth adding as an option in the future.
