Performance wise what is a T5 like compared to a D5 on a XC60? I know bhp is higher on a T5. How does it drive (smoothness in ride, engine noise or any other factors worth noting down)? How do the servicing costs in the UK vary between the two variants?

I had t5 on xc60 as a loaner and it suits that car perfectly. It’s a very responsive engine that is quiet too. The idling noise outside the car is not amazing but it’s pretty much silent inside - D5 is very very audible in comparison (my D5 experience is only with xc90s). I loved to power delivery and wide useful rev range. The hesitation of the gearbox was less noticeable because it has a smaller turbo to spin up and it revs a lot more willingly than D5. It’s a lot more comfortable car for urban driving. Unless you have to have D5 for towing or long motorway commutes I would go with T5 even for the same money. Seeing as it’s cheaper, put that money into your long journey petrol fund. Also you do not need to spec aux heater with T5 as that engine warms up very quickly, that’s another saving.

I didn’t notice it being slower or faster on motorway - it was fine building up speed when merging into traffic fully loaded boot to the roof (it’s tiny btw coming from xc90) with 4px on board.

Has anyone ever been able to explain why a T5 has a 60L tank whereas the D5 gets 71L ?

Seems strange the one with the worse consumption gets the smaller tank. Even the addition of an AdBlue tank to the D5 hasn't caused a reduction, like the way it did on for example on Discovery Sport and Evoque.

I don't know the real reason, but I would guess it is for CO2 tests, smaller fuel tank will result in more than 10Kg in weight reduction (less metal and less fuel onboard - VW does this when you buy the Blue-motion vehicle version (not to be confused with the blue-motion engine badging)), possible in some regions of Europe this could put it in a different tax regime, remember the T5 is 20% less efficient than the diesel - every little helps in those situations.

However, I am not sure if I will be doing enough miles to reap that fuel economy benefit!!
That's exactly why I went for the T5. My mileage being 8000 miles or less a year.
I've got diesel running through my veins, since this is my 1st petrol car since 1987 when I bought my first Peugeot diesel.
I thought long and hard wether to go to petrol, but I thought you can buy a lot of petrol with the £3k saving over the D5. I must say that so far I've no regrets.

Thanks, I had forgotten about the weight carry on. A4s for example with tiny tanks.

What I would personally do is have the HUD and then either buy the T8 which has Pre-Conditioning as Standard or add On Call which will give you engine remote start (automatics only), so the ability to preheat the car. This then negates the need for the heated windscreen.

Kind Regards

+1, love head up display and use remote start when very cold, never scraped the windscreen once.

Leasing costs for MY19 XC60 seem to be filtering out into the wild....
