2003 v40 tailgate brake light cover
Hi everyone,
I have just recently bought a 2003 v40 1.9D (102bhp) and so far so good. I have however noticed there is a leak allowing water into the cargo area when it rains and it appears to be coming from the middle of the tailgate where the brake light is. My question is, is there a way of removing the black plastic shroud so that I can inspect the rubber seal (I suspect this is the issue). I don't want to start trying to prise it off with a screw driver and end up snapping the plastic clips which I'm guessing is how it's kept in place. Photos would be appreciated if possible. Thanks in advance. |

The cover unclips in the same manner that most plastic trim does.
I would be surprised if the brakelight is causing the water leak as it is mounted inside the rear window glass - the bond around the window glass would have to be the culprit. Does the car have a tailgate spoiler fitted? if so, water could be getting in around the mounting screws. Is the water coming in around the top of the tailgate or on the roof as the aerial seal is the most common failure leading to water leaks, if so, the headlining would be wet. New seals can be fitted without removing the aerial and is done from the outside.

Here are some photos of where the water is leaking in, I can't see any visible damage to the plastic or rubber. Any ideas?

From the photos the only thing I can think of is either the water is getting in from outside around the washer jet or there is a split in the washer tube and leaks when the rear washer is used.
