hi , i had the throttle flap issue not long after buying the car but it sorted itself out and never did it again for a year until i changed the starter then all of a sudden it started again straight away on first start after repair , i thought this was strange , the only thing i had touched was the intercooler to throttle body pipe and jubilee clip , i loosend the clip so it was tight enough to hold the pipe but not tight enough to distort the throttle flap body , problem solved , does this make any sense?

Thanks Clan - I will take it back to the garage and demand that the throttle housing is replaced. He was adamant that this would not be the issue, but like you say it's important to eliminate this fault.
I will keep you posted on developments! |

Hi Clan,
By chance do you have a copy of the service bulletin linked to the throttle housing issue. I also have the same problem as a few others on here. Volvo have had my car now for 8 days and the issue has not happened whilst the car has been in there care. Volvo are saying that there has been no bulletins issued against my car....... Secondly they are telling me that no fault codes have been logged on my car, would the throttle housing issue raise a fault code or are they trying to blag it? Cheers Pete |

No it wont store a fault code , if you get the symptoms its worth the reasonable cost of a throttle to eliminate it . There is no way you can prove it is causing the problem but in almost all cases it is cured with a new throttle .

My 56 S40 has been at the garage for 4 weeks now. The car runs as sweet as a nut once it is going but it just wont start. so far the tank and high pressure pumps have been changed as well as the fuel filter and housing. the fuel system has been smoke tested to look for air leaks. could it be the throttle body after all?

most unlikely as it springs open with the vibrations of the engine trying to start .
Get them to reload the software in the ECM . that sometimes does the trick ..

two weeks on!
two weeks on from my last post i still haven't got the car. going back to Clan's last comment, when the car wont start I disconnect the clear plastic fuel pipe that runs from the filter to the pump, it then starts. the garage cant understand this as this would introduce air into the fuel. but reading the comments I wonder if in the act of pulling off the plastic engine cover I am disturbing the throttle housing enough to move the flap. The engine is a euro 4, which would fit the bill. Volvo parts made me laugh, he said that if I hadn't changed it then I might as well because I will have to at some point!

Well after all the trips to the garage the bloody ECU was faulty and I had to have it replaced - with fitting that set me back £1600 at the Volvo dealer. I wrote to Volvo explaining my disgust that a 4 yr old car could have such a major component go wrong - they said had I had a full Volvo service history (I used an independent Volvo servicing company twice) they might have offered some compensation; but otherwise get lost.
I will not be buying Volvo again that is for sure... |

I have had the starting problem with my wifes v50 diesel sport. I have replaced the throttle housing, which worked a treat.
I also serviced the car, new oil and filter and fuel filter and housing, as there were air bubbles in the fuel line. Started the car yesterday, all was good, took it a run, about 8 miles in the engine started to run really rough and started shaking. Now when I rev the car it sounds as if it is knocking, or really tappety from the top end of the engine. The oil was the correct spec, the level is good, the fuel system has been bled from the filter housing and there are no bubbles in the fuel line now. the car seems to idle ok, but when you rev it, it sounds like a bag of spanners. Also noticed a small puddle of oil under the car today, but the level is still good. cannot think why a service would do this. Also i replaced the oil filter again, incase i bought a duff one, but no joy. Could air be trapped in the common rail ??? Last edited by kelvingrove; Jul 15th, 2011 at 20:00. |
